gate valves

Hello All,

I understand the difference and adjustability differences between ball valves and gate valves. I know a gate valve is preferred when it comes wanting a valve to fine tune something, yet it seems like many people still go with ball valves. Are plastic gate valves hard to come by? Do they clog easier or something else?

Also, I've heard of regular bulk heads and heavy duty bulk heads. What is typically used on a larger system?

And, where are some places to order these items?

Thanks,

Ball valves give you the ability to make major changes in flow through a pipe, where gate valves are much more accurate. Ball valves are good to throttle down pumps and/or provide full open to closed flow. Gate valves are used in situations like getting the water level in a skimmer to the perfect level.

I use almost all SCH80 "heavy duty" bulkheads for even the smaller tanks. The grip area on the glass is bigger, they're built stronger, but in my case with big hands it's much easier to tighten them.

Savko has everything you listed.

We agree with RokleM, Schd80 bulkheads are the way to go..more $ initially but peace of mind in the long run...as for the ball valves - seems like there you get what you pay for...the lower end HD/Lowes models you run the risk of seizing or handles breaking while turning...There are ball valves made out of Sched80 material that are also TRUE union style and worth the extra $.

I use unionized ball valves in locations where I want the water to flow either all the way open, or if I need to shut the water off completely. I don't use ball valves in a location that I use to fine tune the flow. I use gate valves in those locations. I also order them from savko.

I used to use "regular" bulkheads and they're pretty easy to crack. I always use the heavy duty bulkheads now but they need a bigger hole drilled in the tank. Just something to be aware of.

And speaking of plumbing, don't waste your money with the check valves that Lowes sells. I used to have four of them in my prior system and every damn one of them started leaking water back through the pipe. I now use the siphon break valves that savko sells. So far, so good.
