gauging interest. sps coral growing challange.

the only problem i see with going with an online provider is that if you don't see the coral, you do not know how large it is going to be so with the number of frags you will get be limited. i agree with gcarrol though that a tonga (wild caught) variety may be best for the color test and frankyreef has a point that millipora's are too easy to grow. by the time of the swap, people will already be trimming it, lol. It would probably be more cost effective if you went with a store which tranships sps frequently like fragfarmer or even black coral hawaii wouldn't it? or possibly even see if you could get someone that is not participating to donate or sell you a larger colony. you could also even go one more step with wild caught colonies vs agricultured ones(or maricultured)

Ive never had luck with wild colonies :(

lol then i know i will beat you in this competition.. lol;)

I don't see why eric can't participate..

And he has wholesale access...

I would love to compete against him... he may get me on colors, but I may get him on growth :)

Once again.. millepora too easy...

I like Eric's corals too but I think for fairness sake we should look into using a coral from a person that is not involved in the competition. I think a wild colony might be best. That way we are all at the same disadvantage of aclimating the frag. We should dip the colonies and quaranteen them to insure that they are disease free. Tonga and Figi corals, especially Tonga, require very high light and are notoriiously difficult to maintain the colors. Corals from one of these areas may be best for the color test.

I agree with Greg... I really like Eric's corals and definately want some of Eric's corals for my personal collection. But, I think to keep it fair... we should keep a level playing ground and start everyone with a neutral acro not involved in the competition. A wild coral would be a great idea and maybe we could target a harder to keep species like A. tutuilensis, where hobbyist struggle with in the home aquarium. We might be able to gain valuable information from those that are successful in keeping them to share with other hobbyists that want to keep the coral in the future. The only difficult thing is where are we gonna find 20+ frags of a less common, A. tutuilensis? So much for that idea...

I don't think people are against Eric from participating, I want him to participate!

I think the debate is whether we should use one of "his" captive grown corals. That way, we're all starting on the same point.

Whatever we use is fine with me as long as its not $100.00/ frag. I think it will be fun no matter which coral we choose to use.

I think it's great that everyone is coming up with all these ideas on where to acquire the starter frags. I also agree with Greg that a wild collected colony is probably our best bet to yield as many similar frags as possible. But in the end, we all must realize that Richard, the organizer of this "challenge", will have to do most of the legwork to get this thing going. Don't forget that like the rest of us, he has a full time job. So what works out the best for him is something that we'll have to accept if we want to participate.

I misread your post greg :)

well it appears that many people don't want to use a coral the eric already is raising. this does make sense everyone wants a fair playing flied. if we broke this into groups the farmers and the novices. (sorry need some names here.) a group and b group. maybe if eric donates to the one group he is not competiting against. possible suggestion. Maybee 4 corals should be used. hard for one group and easy for the other perhaps. i do not want to discourage anyone in this hobby. haveing easier for the novice group may be good. i dont really know.

does anyone have a contact/relationship with anyone from reefermaddness. they may be a good solution. for a wild colony or something. great ideas.

possible frag update. We have 15 of Chips acro, purple/green and 15 acropora toruosa, blue Avaliable from ORA. this is a one thing do to the amount of corals. Thanks laura from ORA into looking into this for us/:). if we do this i will order these on monday. need group feedback first.

There has also been offered a hand painted animal painting by Roxxy. to the winner of this. thanks for the offer on this. more info to follow.

coollll.. this sounds like fun!

OT my electric bill was ONLY 242 this mo!!!!

I might up my lighting for an hour now ;)

Ok I want too play as well. So when is all this going to happen? Where are you planing to meet?

I think this could be for bragging rights... :)

On bad note, I just lost half my sunlight for my stupid neighbor blocked part of my window.. :(

Do we need to set up random drug tests for the cheaters????

I would hate to see someone win just to have to give up their title due to a high testosterone reading.

does HGH give off high testoserone readings?

lol we need a reef commisioner for this contest. I'm going to borrow some plexi oil from Mcgurie and rub it on my frag...:-)

added to the list of sps contenters will also be

Mchava
dave b o2 too many strikes

i will wait until weekend is over. i do not want to try to exclude anyone. possibly 2 groups of 15 or 3 groups of 10 depending on final particpation. althought this is bigger already then i had expected.
cheating.. we will have none of that here. greg stay away from my tank:D. actually you will need to come over he he. i really dont see how anyone can cheat to grow a coral out. hmm are there any banned substances other then cynaide and copper?
judging. well still looking for ideas.
