I need a alien abduction rescue flare man! Those things are pricey :D

Seriously though what kind of test kits we talking about I think Salifert CA or Magnesium would be beneficial to a lot of us.

Well, like I said, once we narrow the field we can look at specifics. But, the kits I'm looking at are IMO pretty basic. At the same time they are pretty much the same tests people bring in water samples for.

HOLD THE PHONE! I have an idea that might make many people happier than this lame-o poll thing. I just need to figure out how to make it work from a logistics standpoint.

What I am thinking of here is offering several products at once. This however, has the potential to turn into a HUGE MESS. I would like to do it this way if I can wrap my mind around how to get it to work... sign ups, payment, who gets what, when to have the deadline and a myriad of other PITA group buy things. So let me sit on this for a day or so. I think I can work it out. I have to go make some phone calls. See you soon.

You know, I am not sure of HOW these things work, or who all is involved in them, but I wanted to put forward a suggestion.

As a club, were are here to serve each others, as well as the community. The folks who ppost on the boards here have a good idea of the groub buys, etc. The people who attend the meets are aware as well, I am sure. But there are alot of hobbysists out there who wont get to take advantage of the GBs. It also seems to me, that one of our favorite things in the world, the LFS, gets shafted because we bypass them on alot of items. It seems that it would be in our best interest to somehow give back to the LFS by seeing if they would be interested in taking part in our GBs. Not just one or two of them, but all of them in the areas we serve... Even if they do not benefit from the buy, I think it would be a nice way to show those that are ignorant, or uncaring about what we do, that we are here. In the event that a LFS would want to join in with us, great... More product being purchased, less shipping, the possiblity of maybe helping the LFS by giving them a better deal than even they could get alone.

I have no idea how much they LFS get products for. I am sure that the independant stores arent getting product at the same cost that a place like Petsmart is, & it might help them to compete... Just a thought.

I could care less who participates in these GBs but I would prefer them to be active members in our community. The club could really end up getting used if such an offer were presented to the wrong individuals IMO.

If you are an active member on this forum I think you morethan qualify for a GB whatever your profesion. I don't think we should advertise outside this areana as that could almost qualify as a commercial venture. BTW Jason started this GB thing with my 100% approval as a means to get our club members items that some of the LFS can not get there hands on at a discount nothing more than that. I think it will benefit our community in the end and cause no serious damage to any LFS in the surrounding areas.

...Even if they do not benefit from the buy, I think it would be a nice way to show those that are ignorant, or uncaring about what we do, that we are here...

Oh trust me, they know we are here and that is why we need to be careful about how these GBs are conducted.

Thanks again Jason for all you have done with this.

If we offer this outside of the club then it is no longer a club group buy, and that is what would hurt our LFS the most. If we started selling our group buys to the general public then they no longer need to go to our lfs and that hurts the store.

I do however think it is a good idea to offer them a chance to purchase with us as well. I know I have always included the local fish stores when I handled group buys.

What Im trying to get at here is this,
The CVRC is a club not a business. Jason did this for our group only, not to start some future commercial venture that just anyone can buy into. Remember the club and Jason get nothing from these GBs, they are a gift to all of us here.

Oh where to begin?? I know many shop keepers and have no intention of hurting anyone's business. Nor am I capable of doing so with these tiny little group buys. Quite frankly, it is hard enough to get enough people in on the same thing to do one in the first place! Hence my idea for offering several different things on one GB-- to even make the minimum order is tough! Then I have to deal with who wants what and where and how they are going to pick it up, and how they are going to pay-- so just keeping track of payments is a big pain. Then I have to deal with the shipping and how to assess that. Ordering deadlines (wholesalers' prices change weekly and sometimes daily, so putting together a GB HAS TO HAPPEN FAST!) Then there is the issue of shipping losses! etc. etc. etc.

I am not complaining about any of this! If I did not want to do it, I simply would not. Period. My point is rather to point out the intricacies of a group buy and that putting one together is not as easy as it seems and that none of these petty little group buys is going to have any noticable impact on any LFSs.

Look folks, I am a Libertarian! I believe in the capitalist system, personal freedom, personal responsibility, minimal government and the whole she-bang. If this GB thing would actually hurt the businesses I love the most, none of this would be happening in the first place.

Just to clarify, I am not pointing any fingers, or preaching... I was just saying if it would help the club, to help the LFS (because not everyone of every LFS customers are in the club) it might not be a bad idea.

No worries

And that is?

Because a couple of them have attempted to put a permanent end to the club.

OFFICIAL POST

Here is the thing. This club is not a business entity. It was never intended to be one. We are a non profit type of deal. We have no ties to any pet shop and we do not endorse any particular shop. As individuals, we all have our favorites and I love to explore new shops when I come across them. This group buy account was set up by me, on behalf of the club members so that we could get a thing or two here and there on the cheap. No one is making money off of these GBs-- except the wholesaler. This wholesaler is just a businessperson who was kind enough to allow fish clubs and aquarium societies etc. to do GBs. It is that simple. These GBs ARE NOT GOING THROUGH ANY RETAILER NOR WILL THEY EVER. As a matter of fact it is of critical importance to our mission and status that we DO NOT.

In short, we ain't got nothin' ta do with any LFS-- especially when it comes to this GB thing. Furthermore, it is imperative that discussions of these GBs remain on topic and not get sidetracked into that gray area. It is not my intent to be nasty here; however, from this point forward all posts that go astray and start talking about this shop or that shop will be promptly removed. Additionally, in the interest of the future of the club, if this GB thing becomes a problem I will simply discontinue the whole thing. I really don't want to do that but there are legal issues to consider and I will not be party to the destruction of the CVRC from within.

So, let's all just take a step back, take a deep breath, pop open a frosty and go back at this being extremely mindful that there are things we can and things we can not do. To veer from that course is to step into a minefield.
