i wanted to add another wall to my sump/refugium, so i went to HD and found a tube of GE silicone I*, so i decided to do google it to see if it is reef safe. I was scrolling through some forms and read somewhere that all silicone GE produces have mildew now and other bad stuff for aquariums. is that true or not?

I've never understood why people go to HD for silicone when every LFS in town (my town, anyway...) sells the All Glass Aquarium branded silicone. No question about whether that one is safe.

Because you get 4x the GE Silicone 1 for 1/3 the price. For someone like me who has built 3 sumps in the last 6 months it is very cost effective.

Make sure you get the kind that doesn't have a mildew repellant. That's what you want to avoid. I think window and door clear is the one most people suggest. Get a picture of the label and ingredient list on the tube you want to buy and post it up here if you're still not sure.

Technically, GE Silicone I Window and Door is what you want. There is a silicone I that is not reef safe, I think it's called Bath and Tile or the like.

I used GE 1 to reseal this tank, i've now upgraded and plan on only using RTV100 series for putting in a new starphire front on a 240L. RTV is much stronger, but I would say GE1 is fine for baffles, and resealing/protecting the inner seams, I had my 150 in the video up for 8-12 months with GE1 reseal before I took it down. I had a mp40 and a dart CL as well. No problems with fish growing extra eyes or anything either. :frog:

I've used both sillicone 1&2 in my dartfrog tanks with no Ill effects and they're very sensitive to any toxins but wouldn't use it to build a tank because evan though it's safe it's not very strong and to be safe use sillicone 1 when you can

ill call GE later to be 100 percent sure.

No matter what, GE is going to tell you no. The reason is, if your tank crashes, they don't want to have to deal with it. Better to tell everyone no on the fish-tank thing than to have some fool crash a tank and blame it on the silcone.

That being said, if GE-I door and window wasn't safe, I bet we'd be reading about a LOT of dead fish or coral around here.
