Gen-X PCX-40 (Mak4) Users

I am looking at buying a Gen-X PCX-40 pump. If you are currently using one of these pumps, can you please let me know what you think of it? How noisy is it? Would you buy it again?

I bought one for the new tank that I'm setting up. I've heard they are good pumps.. they can be a little bit noisy, but it shouldn't be too bad (wouldn't keep you up at night)

Can't beat the price though.

great pumps,i use a mak4 and 5 i dont think there any louder than any other external pump,mostly fan noise.when i use to have the mak4 in my dineing room it was not loud enough to bother me.But it was not in the stand either vibrating the wood.made that mistake with a sequence,now that was a loud pump.

I have two - one for my return pump and one for my skimmer. One is loud and the other is not. They were not bought at the same time, so not sure why they would be different. I did have to replace the impeller and housing on one that vibrated really bad right out of the box. The parts were free since it was under warranty. Easy to take apart and clean which is a good thing.

I would seriously take a look at the Blueline BL1100

A little more energy efficient for pretty much the same pump.

i bought a mak4 and its been on for a few weeks, until i find a new one to replace it with. i tried to take the fan off and it was still loud. i built an insulated box around it and that made it not as loud, but still anoying. if it burns up its no big lose to me, then i will be forced to buy a new one. in case thats not clear enough i hate MINE and wish i never bought it.

just to be fair to the pump. some people love them and say they are quite as stated by someone above. its got great flow, and the price is right. i would suggest if you want to get one try to hear it run before you buy it. some are loud and some are not

other than the noise its a good pump. puts out good flow, and has run nonstop for three weeks wraped in an insulated box with any problems

GenX external return pumps are all I use anymore... For the money, you can't beat them, IMO. Out of six I have running, one is a little loud. But as far as comparable GPH pumps, the Mak 4 is pretty energy efficient compared to the Iwaki equivalent.

Kick a$$ pump IMO. Have one running flawlessly on my CL through a OM Squirt for over a month. I swear my Mag 7 is louder than my PCX-40. Here is a pic of how mine is installed:

mak4 is loud, I replace mine with a panworld blueline and couldn't be happier, though at a price of course.
