I am looking at a Gen-x 20 pump for external use, it is alot less $ than the Iwaki MD20RLXT I was looking at. Anyone have experiance with Gen-x? Do you really get what you pay for?
Good reliable pump. Mine is a little louder than I'd like, but I think most of the noise is from vibration in the stand. I'll be adding some foam material under it shortly to quiet it down. I'd recommend GenX based on my experience.
Iwakis are generally considered the most reliable pumps in this hobby, they will easily give you 5+ years, if not 10+ years of unrelenting service, which is a long time given the general unforgiving nature of saltwater.
Japanese Iwaki is tried and true and quieter and because of that better than the American version. If going external where noise, heat is critical I would use nothing but a Japanese Iwaki. Having serviced pump mfrg companies I learned that the quieter the pump the better engineered it is.Of course being a safety professional by trade I only use submersible pumps. MUCH less chance for a flood. IMHO Jap Iwaki all the way.
Weird my Iwaki MD-40rlxt is built like a tank and is in no way "quiet", in fact it is considerably louder than my mag 12, which is clearly a differently level in the quality department.
