I'm in the process of setting up another tank (126"x32"x34"). My usual process is to narrow my equipment choices down to one or two options, buy one recently used, then if I like it buy several new ones to fill out the system. I recently bought two Gen3Pro units (used but in visually good shape) , I do not have a Reeflink. One was a bit dusty so I cleaned it out with a can of compressed air.
Issue 1: I'm having trouble connecting by USB. I was able to do a factory reset on both (one took a while to connect), but they do not consistently connect through EcoSmart Live. The Connection manager says they are connected, but they only show up in EcoSmart Live 50% of the time. The cord is new, I have not yet tried another cord. Looking around online there appear to be a lot of intermittent complaints about this, is there something obvious I am missing? Is this why so many people end up with a ReefLink?
Issue 2: I'm planning on hanging these ~10 inches over a 34" tall tank which will have a lot of SPS, among other things. I happen to like the 12k look, so am planning to run them at 100%. After doing this for a few minutes the fans sound like a small vacuum cleaner, and I only have two of them right now (planning 6-8 plus 1-2 for the frag tank). I found a post elsewhere that stated "They will be quieter once you get them on a program". Is this just because most people program them at partial power, or are the fans unusually high before a program is set (ie right after a reset)?
Using a new Apogee SQ520 these have the same PAR value and comparable spread (only measured at 12", I need to do a couple other grids) to the Rapid DIY kits I'm also testing. I like that the Ecotech units look a lot nicer and have better controls (if I can keep them working), but I can't deal with the noise.
Edit: Is there some value at which the fans stop going into overdrive, ie 90% is quiet, but at 95% they get really loud? If it matters my house sits at 80°F during the summer, there will be lids over the tank.
