Gender/Age of Aquarists

My girlfriend asked me if there are just as many women in this hobby as men and if so, how old they are.

there are definately not as many woman and most of the ones that are in the hobby are in it due to significant other.

i love it, my husband could care less about the tank, except when things go bad and i'm moody, then he just doesn't like it.

if i recall, your wife set up the largest tank in this forum

Jessica (is Jess okay?) if you don't mind, are there any reasons that you can see behind that? Is not exactly like keeping pretty sticks or little fishes is exactly, very manly. I can see the lack of interest for say a shark tank or the like, but reef tanks seems fairly unbias?

I have the coolest wife. I took her to see a 240 that I wanted and she said, "Don't they come any bigger than this?" Now I have a 390!!!

I would have to say of all the people I've met in the hobby the breakdown is maybe 40% women 60% men. Not an overly large separation, but I think some of the older school hobbyists come from something of a bachelor pad by the water and maybe later got married, settled down and got their wife into it and are trying tanks again... There are a lot of young couples and i think most of the young singles I have met in the hobby are male.

I don't know, I think maybe most women are either for the cute and cuddly puppy\kitty crowd or not concerned about pets. Guys always seemed to have the majority of creepy crawly type pets and our reef friends are rather "different" when compared to fur or feathers... I think the gap is lessening as it becomes easier and easier to get reef tanks into the house.

i think we just love our toys LOL

we never grow up just get bigger bodies.

you are right but she did it for tyler and i due to me not having a tank at the time. that one cost alot less in elec.:lol: she okay with it but i've tried and it's just not her thing. when i see other wives into it it makes me what to try harder. hopefully one of theses days. and for the women in the group like becca, chrisste, jade, kari and all the others out there more power to you. you guys rock

There are definately more guys into reefing than us gals. At TBRC meetings, we typically only have 2-3 women. I've noticed the guys are really into all the equipment and technology of it. I'm surprised more guys aren't into predator tanks but in our club I'm one of the few that seems interested in aggressives. My husband isn't into reefing but he's really supportive and is somewhat interested in the tanks. I think he likes that they keep me busy (= off his back, lol) and that it gives him something else cool to show people who come over.
