General guidelines on drilling tank for return line

Hello

I am having a tank built and am debating on getting the tank drilled for a return. Are there any things that I should bear in mind before.having this done? The tank with be set up as a peninsula with a ghost type overflow on the end.

Is the tank going to be glass or acrylic?
If glass low iron? what color silicon?
how thick will side and top and bottom?
how many gallons so we can give more input. dims will help too.
