I am looking to buy myself a generator for my 90 gal tank. I dont have tons of money towards the generator but I also dont want to get a cr***y generator. Does anyone have any suggestions on any okay generators?

thanks!

anything Honda ,,,, they are well worth the cash , i have a EX-4500 that you can run a whole house on , that you can barley hear when its running standing next to it and they do have smaller versions of it ,, i think its the EU line ,,,, small, affordable and up to the job too ,,,,

Man, I thought you all were over that.

It is funny, just wait till you loose power and you wish you had that one on ebay.

When your tank crashes I will be the first to say man that 100 dollar generator sure ran my tank great .

what about a invertor? i dont here anyone talking about them. are they not good? what i read on them they seemed pretty cool, for a smaller setup.

I dont want to cause any issues i just wanted to know what would be a decent generator that will run my skimmer pump, 1 powerhead, return pump, 2 heaters (or just 1 heater), and lights

I would suggest something in the 3000-5000 watt range. It will run everything you mentioned as well as your refrigerator and a few other lamps. You could probably plug in a TV too as long as it isn't a Plasma or some power hog.

You can usually find one in that size range for about $350-500. If you are OK with a used one you can watch Craigslist for one in the "household", "general" or "farm & garden" sections. A used one might go for as little as $200 and be able to get you by for years.

One thing to be sure of is that you put Sta-bil or another brand of fuel stabilizer in your gas so it is still good when you really need it.

Inverters work well for short term solutions. If you have a way to charge the batteries during an outage they will continue to work just fine but a 2,000 watt inverter usually runs about $100 and a 5,000 watt model is usually around $300 so they aren't really a great savings but they are convenient if you are a camping kind of person and want to watch tv or run your laptop out in the wilderness :)

Hope that helps.

PS. Just so you guys know a little behind the scenes info... I sent an email to apologize to rob.holbrook after all that happened and when I posted that I was without electric he offered to let me borrow his generator. I think it may be time to let that whole episode rest in peace. We have both gotten past it and I don't really want it dredged up again.

the Honda EU series is an inverter not a generator. You can run computer equipment on them because there are no power spikes or surges. They are also very expensive about a buck a watt. The smallest i have seen is a 1000 watts the largest is 3000 of course that was several years when we carried Honda line.
One of our mechanics bought one I think 3500 watts from Aldi's maybe last year for 199.00 it has a Chinese Hinda engine knock off but he says it runs great 200.00 bucks.

I agree with Kevin no reason to bring up the past

the offer is still out there if anyone is ever in a bind and needs a generator I am willing to loan it out.

Anyways I am sure the goal is to run your tank and the inhabitants.

Thanks for clearing things up Kevin

it would ..along with your neighbors , and his neighbors tank as well ,,,,, thats not a bad little gen for a emergency, good price too

Be very careful here, they do not tell you what type of engine it is powered by, my guess is it is Chinese. The draw back is there are no parts available for them.
We just had a Troybilt snowblower ( MTD product ) in the shop brand new bought in November, it had a carb leak, was missing a fuel bowl drain plug gasket, had to buy the whole carb as there is no gaskets available in this country. If something goes wrong it is fine under warranty but when the warranty is up you have to buy it.

Oh did I mention the same goes for the engine itself! The warranty states that if anything major goes wrong to replace the engine under warranty, why you ask? No parts available!

Not knocking the product just pointing out the facts so you can make an informed decision.
