genicanthus semifasciatus

reefhotspot is sold out, but I often see fish there that people are looking for. Mainly angels. I know they have had them in the past. I'd get on their email list or call them.

And you can always talk to Kevin at liveaquaria and see if he has any inside info on when they might get some or what time of year you should expect them.

They've always been scarce and in fairly high demand. Generally speaking, in the past they've been slightly less common than the watanabe's and around the same price. Lately it seems like they're even more scarce than the watanabe's (which seem to be less available lately also) and the price has sky rocketed. The last one I saw on DD was a female and sold for $350 in a matter of minutes.

The last time I remember a male being for sale was a few years ago. A local wholesaler actually had a male and 3 females. I got a tip about them from a friend, but I was tankless at the time... so bad timing.

I talked to Copps about his when he spoke at NVR recently and he mentioned they had lost color since he acquired them, but were otherwise healthy. They may be a fish that tends to lose color in captivity.

tim- Yeah thats the last place i saw them too. I dont believe they had males though.

jacob- I wish i would have gone to that :/ . Elliot at kalypso's had a female he was holding for someone along time ago . Do you know if copps had his with a female or just by itself?

Yeah it was a good presentation. I was shocked that only 30 something people turned out... but things had been slow with the club for a while.

Anyway, Good luck tracking them down!

they used to be super common in my country (Singapore) in the past, a few years ago.

But the last i've seen ANY was more than 2 years ago!

and since then, no more. so for 2 years straight, not a single specimen appeared.

i want this too.

There is a LFS near me that carries those fish. It is called Absolutely Fish in Clifton NJ. The store would blow your mind if you ever get a chance to go there. I don't know if they ship but if they do it would be worth looking into. They always have healthy livestock and always have rare fish in stock.

I've kept my pair in my sps reef for a few years now at 77-79 degrees and I think they'd like it cooler... the male has reverted to a partial female coloration which was not unexpected, but he is also a bit thin... I may try to catch these guys out to place in a cooler water system which would benefit them more. This is a gorgeous species that has for years been underpriced IMO based solely perhaps on the fact that it is only exported from the Philippines... The Dallas World Aquarium has a harem collected in Japan in a 1500 gallon exhibit kept cool, and the male is stunning... as orange as a traffic cone!

John, my tank is running at a nice 69-70 right now. You can bag them up and send em over, and since it's the holidays I'll even pay the shipping fes :D

Hey Jacob, thanks... but I'll be the one supplying the coolwater system... :D

RBU1, that's the fish... here's my pair...

You sure John? I do have some extra space ;)

Those are nice. I can see what you mean about the faded color (or maybe it's just the blue-ish hue in the photo)... still very pretty though.
