Geothermal Chiller

My new digital camera arrived yesterday. I'll start my build thread this week. I'll post a link on a thread in the Tampa Bay Reef Club Forum.
Mike

I have another twist to this idea. What do you thing about a 100 gallon plastic tank/barrell for the geothermal chiller, filled about 1 foot with sand and then run the water. Sort of a remote deep sand bed / geothermal chiller in one???

I said acro. not a new pest. monti's are fine and untouched. I got 3 wrasses that are actually possibly starting to help.

lamb I would not recommend that but lots of people would. if you need to do anything with the sand for any reason you would have to dig it up.

robthorn...why do you always have to make so much sense!!! I appreciate the reality check. I'm still playing with the geothermal chiller idea. I talked to a guy at Rockin Reef, think his name was Tom, got lots of good info. I'm thinking 100 gallon plastic, with the top at 4 feet deep. I'll run a separate pump, circulating from the sump skimmer section to the barrell and back to the sump return section. Still thinking!!!

well glad at least one person in the world thinks I make sense. I do service for a living though so I always have to think of the what if's.
tom is the right person to talk to. scubadude on here has it also or at least had it. I can't think of his real name though. I think he owned coralfrags.com or with a z on the end instead of the s. black home page with neon gree letters.

I like this idea. mflamb did you end up building one? Are you still considering it? Maybe we can work togeather, one weekend at your place, then a weekend at mine:-)

I live in a deed restricted crazy HOA type place, so I need to be fairly discrete when I build mine... Still considering the idea of having the pool comany digging me a hole when they have the equipment at the house... of course this could be a year or 2 down the road... hummmm.,

I'm the president, 3rd term, of a crazy HOA type place, so I understand. I'm going to start up the tank and see what happens with the temp before I decide. If I need temp control, geothermal will be my first choice. I'll let you know.

So does anyone have one of these barrel in the ground systems here in the tampa area? I would love to see ehat you have done and how well it works.

I am afraid that if I bury a barrel or 3 in a row, the heat will just build up over a week or two and then then system will no longer pull heat out of my water.

i found with those walmart clip on fans and my house being about your temp. i never get above 80 hardly. those fans really help especially because my canopy is about 3 inches from the wall so i can have heat transfer

Tom, the owner of Rockin Reef in St. Pete/Pinellas Park (where ever that store is) used this system for a long time. I spoke with him about it. Give him a call.

the system I need this for will be in the garage, south facing garage. the garage door will be in direct sun all day in the summer. I will insulate, but it will still heat up.

Thanks, will do!

What is GARF Grunge?

I QTd my Tonga for awhile and checked it nightly with red lights and never found a thing. I thought it was dead rock for sure. Last night i check out the rock and there is some 4+ inch long worm like thing which retracted (inverted on itself) and vanished quickly back into the Tonga in the back. I have no idea what it was, where it came from, if it is good or bad but I am thinking its a ribbon worm of some type living in the hollow Tonga I have.

I am all for QT'n everything :) I picked up some good pods on my last frag shopping spree and I am happy about it since the other pods I had wanted to eat my Clowns.

I like Rock'n Reefs central coral area. I love all the free swimming fish he has and the space. He also has them all trained to come into the end box if he needs to catch one for a customer :)

Funny watching all the fish waiting at the door to the cage for food... It was very natural in how his fish swam in that holding tank.

o2zen...Check out www.garf.com

And when you are done there... got

www.garf.org and check out the grunge. They claim it is a great way to seed a sand bed with lots of great stuff. i bought some, it was ok, but I will never do it again. My next tank will have a shallow sand bed and new uncured live rock. I will let the rock cure in my tank for 2 - 4 months before adding much of anything. The curing of the rock will seed my sand bed and get my tank going much better than anything I can buy.

That is a great link for the insulation. I will go home and make some measurements. Thanks!

heck maybe I will just insulate the garage as good as I can. That will he;lp keep heat out. Then I could just leave the garage door to the laundry room open, and let the cool air from the house into the garage. If the garage is not heating up to fast, it should keep that room under 80. If the room is under 80, I should be able to keep the tanks under 82.

I could put the lights on a reverse timing so that they are on during the cooler night and not contributing to the heating of the day.

Maybe I will go with that plan for the first summer, and take drastic measures if they are necessary. hummmm... this part of the planning sucks!
