Has anyone heard of the German Klaes protein skimmer. If so can you explain this skimmer? I don't quite understand how it works.:D :D

looks like one of the first recirculating skimmer designs. The skimmer in the article is pretty big. I wonder how performance was.

try canada, seems that's the only place they exist in the western hemisphere

if anyone is interested in the impeller design, it is US patent #4764311

it is easiest to view the patent design text and detailed diagrams (pdf) at www.freepatentsonline.com (free sign up) - much better interface than uspto.gov

This is a really old thread but I just thought I would chime in. I have one sitting in my storage here that I bought new and imported back in the early to mid 90's. These skimmers are long since discontinued and were way ahead of their time. Not only was it huge, it was an amazing skimmer! Heck, the one I have was removed from my system in working order and I still have some new spare parts for it. If I had the space in my system, I'd revive the thing just to see it running again! Back in the day when I bought this thing, I was also experimenting with different downdraft designs which worked well but this was by far the best skimmer I had ever used. I need to dig it out of the shed and take some pictures. Not sure what I will ever do with it but if nothing else, having it is nostalgic!

Scott the Klaes was always my dream skimmer back in the day. Never could afford one then. But they where fantastic skimmers and as usual with German built equipment built to last. Wish they where still in business.

Yea, it would have been interesting to see what Klaes came up with had they still been in business. If I can muster up the energy this weekend, I might just dig it out of the shed. Naturally it's in the very back corner and all I can see is the collection cup. I stumbled upon a box in my garage a week or so ago with the spare part for it which got me thinking about it again.
