Get more out of the resin in your RO/DI!!!!

This whole thing may be nothing new, but to me it is so I thought I would share.

In most RO/DI setups the resin container sits horizontally. What I noticed since purchasing the BRS color changing resin was that only the bottom half of the resin container was ever changing color. Gravity was forcing the water to run along the bottom of the container so the whole top half wasn't even being used. I hated to see all that resin go to waste so I came up with a very simple solution. Hang the resin container vertically. This forced the whole container to fill with water before exiting the other side. I'm now seeing the color change uniformly up the container. No more wasted resin!!! :D :D

The BRS reactor is also better because it has the cartridge that you can acually fill to 100%. With the cheap horizontal DI containers that most RODI units come with, there's no cartridge and it's nearly impossible to fill up the reactor with resin to 100%; therefore, there's a small zone at the top (remember horizontally, so it's long) with no DI resin, therefore the water travelling across the top might not ever touch the resin.

Good post though Talon. I changed my setup about a year ago and it was so obvious of an upgrade but I found it through the BRS site. As I was changing it, I was thinking to myself "How could I have missed such an abvious thing."

Mine is upright, and still not all of the resin will change color before it's spent.

I agree, buy a unit with refillable upright DI chamber. I may not get 100% out of it, but definitely better than horizontal is my understanding.
