Get on the List!

You can induce a split by laying a fairly light object across the center of it. I just did this with my RBTA and it split over night. But there are many ways to go about this, including using a razor-blade or scissors to cut it in half.

Anthony Calfo did a demo on fragging them at IMAC last year. He also told me there is lots of info at Marine Depot, in his forum.

awesome anemone Jeni wish I had room.. Maybe once my new 45 hex gets established (like 5 more months or so) I'll have to get a frag from you. Question though just cuz im curious, I know anemones can be fragged, no problem.. I'm just wondering if you could cut like say 4, 5, or 6 frags at the same time or if you just have to like cut it in half. let it heal cut in half again etc etc.. just curious.

You can only cut in half--right down the middle, from the mouth, outward on each side, so each half gets a mouth. He said they heal very quickly--about 5 minutes, the circle will be closed. Feed the crap out of it & it'll be ready to frag again in 2 weeks!

I wouldnt plan on doing it that soon. I used a razor blade to induce a split on mine about a month ago. They are healed now but it took them a little while. It has to form the rest of the mouth and it takes it some time to heal. I would not cut mine this soon. I am going to wait at least another month before I cut mine again. They are RBTAs but its the same idea. Just my opinion.:D I was pretty nervous about it when I first did it and they will look bad the first night.

Puffer you can read my post on it at uber

I have also done this myself before, on splits from my RBTA. It had split 2x in 2 weeks. I cut the 1st split about a month later, which gave me 3 total. Was just gonna frag the 2nd split, when I realized all 3 were gone! Didn't realize that chocochip stars ate anemones... :(

Can you give a little detail on what you did, how you did it, etc?

Well, my RBTA was encroaching upon my lil' colony of birdsnest, and I wanted to discourage the anemone from going towards the birdsnest. I pointed a MJ1200 directly at it and then put a thin piece of live rock over the anemone. I thought that this would discourage it from moving towards the birds nest and cause it to retreat to an area with less flow and more light.

Apparently I was wrong, because I woke up the next day to find 2 anemones in the spot where there was only 1 the previous day.

Personally, I think that a piece of Tonga Branch would be perfect for causing this result. I think I'm gonna try this again in a month or so, once these anemones get a little bigger.

My anemone is attached on an underhang, I think if I did this he'd just retreat and pull the rock off when he shrunk up.

what the hell, I just tried it. I have a long branch of tonga, tried to lay it on top of him and he made a move towards the underhang, I have it semi pinned to him before he could make it all the way in.
