getting a 9002 skimmer dialed in...

I bought a used (1yr) Tunze 9002 nano skimmer. Installed it today. Was producing massive amounts of clear aqueous foam. About 2 hours later, the foam is barely at the bottom of the collection cup. The air screw was pretty much closed.

Is this normal?

Thanks!

Now you can start gradually opening the screw, maybe an eighth of a turn, so that the bubbles are just above the base of the cup. It isn't unusual for a skimmer to foam a lot when first installed. It will eventually start skimming consistently. I found with the 9002 that cleaning the collection cup twice a week maximizes its performance. Since the reactor is narrow, film build-up makes the foam collapse more quickly than in skimmers with wide reactors. Also make sure the water level corresponds with the data on the unit. It is faded but if you look closely on the narrow end of the skimmer, there is a wavy water level mark.

Which is better, start with the screw wide open and dial closed, or to start with it closed and dial open?

I was having trouble dialing in my nano too. I took it apart today and found the airline was kinked by the pump. I had to turn around the the little thing that the airline hooks on to and now it is working really good. Just wanted to let you know incase it is your issue as well. Now it dials in great, set and forget.
