Getting a NEW light

I have basically a retro canopy currently on my tank....a total of 260w of PC. I ordered a Current Orbit Fixture which has a 10,000k 150w hqi metal halide, dual 65w actinic sunpaqs & 4 lunar lights. Tony at Swamp Bottom gave me a GOOD price on the unit.

Sooo should I acclimate my corals to the new light?

yeah, your gonna want to slowly bring up your burn tome for the HQI's. I would also recommend using either egg crate or screen in layers......removing some at a time so that you don't burn your corals.

That's a nice fixture, I have the 48" verson..... Although, I have been eveing the T5 setups latley......

I agree.

Nice fixture, Joe.
Gonna have to make some room for more SPS now. ;)

Let me know when you're ready...got a bunch of nice freebies for ya.

nice light....I keep looking at them online....just can't bring myself to spend the $$$$$$....I'm cheap..lol...and jealous....good luck with it..if you need some eggcrate let me know..I can bring it saturday

Sorry Joe, don't know for sure. I'd say 1 week isn't long enough for your current corals. I've read here on RC that when acclimating, put a few layers of screen on and remove one a week for a couple/few weeks.

Personally, I think multiple layers of screen will block out too much light, so I'm not sure. Does this fixture allow you to turn on the MH separately from the actinics...if so, replace the actinics with 50/50's for a while...run them as you run your current lights...and slowly increase the hours MH are on over the course of a few weeks.

I'm still considering the outer orbit fixture. Only thing that worries me is they have internal ballasts correct? That and have side fans not top fans. When i later add a canopy affraid it may cause some headaches. The side fans maybe easier, IDK I'll prolly also get the Outer orbit lighting;)

There's also the Aqualight Pro HQI Fixture which i believe has external ballasts, not sure on the fan setup. Have to look into it more.

They both look nice and work great I'm sure. I do like Orbit systems.

Performance wise how are thier ballasts? Reliable?

Most of the current lighting products are well respected and IMO equally reliable. It was a toss up between the orbit and the aquapro. They are prety much the same fixture. They have pretty much all the same features.

With respect to the ballast being internal vs. external......I suppose it's a matter of preference. I believe that the fans are on the sides in both fixtures. The coralife fixture only comes with legs, orbit has hangers and legs (not that Im hanging mine) Personally I wouldn't mount either of these in a canopy because I would be concerned they wouldn't get proper air flow.

And I have read a few threads about the coralife fans being noisy.

I must have read the same thread about the fans. I defin want a canopy but i know with funds that will be alittle down the road. Will be needing the lights before then.

May end up selling on RC or swapping for a good retro.

I'm convinced Orbit it is.

The outer orbits have 2 fans on each end and 3 on top I have never had a problem with heat and use the mounting legs above my tank

fwiw,
My cyano problem is now solved with a newish bulb. It is only running 6 hrs a day. I want to pop some vhos for a little extra light, but I was re-taught a couple things- old bulbs cause algae problems, and B] a new idea, maybe we don't need so long a photo period with mega strong lights????
