Getting back into the hobby

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on here. 2007 I believe
My last tank was a 60 gallon with a sump. A lot has changed. I’m interested in not having a sump again but there seems to be a lot of choices out there. Looking at a 40 gallon and up tank mainly due to wanting the length over 30 inches.
IM seems to make good tanks but I do not want to have to buy the stand too

Are the AIO tanks really easier?

I think it’s really personal preference. Many people have very successful AIO tanks.

I, personally, do not have any experience with them. I’ve always had a sump since my first fish only in the early 80’s and my first reef in 1990.

Id like to buy an innovative marine tank but the 40 gallon looks to only come with the stand(which I don’t want)

Is that the only way they sell them?

I don’t know the answer as I’ve never purchased from them. I would suggest email or call them to ask. I know most, if not all, tank manufacturers will not honor their warranty unless you use their stand.

Welcome back!

As @griss mentioned, many manufacturers will not honor any warranty claims unless you use their stand. That said, I believe the vast majority of AIO manufacturers will only sell with their stand.

A couple that don’t require a stand purchase (or at least my LFS doesn’t require the stand purchase) would be JBJ Rimless Flat Panel tanks and Planet Aquarium Tideline All In Ones. There’s likely many other lesser known brands out there but the big names (IM, Waterbox, RedSea, Cade, etc) will usually require the stand (I believe some of the smaller IM tanks don’t require the stand but I believe those are all less than 20 gallons or so).

Are JBJ AIO tanks good? I’m looking at the 45

I haven’t heard much bad about JBJ. They are a legacy brand, likely best known for the NanoCube. I personally would have no issue buying one if I needed one, but I haven’t bought a JBJ tank since the original 12 gallon NanoCube from 2003/2004ish.

This is 60G Aqueon, on a credenza, with no sump, but HOB filter, HOB Skimmer and two Jebao wavemakers.
Viparspectra lights.

Welcome back, it doesn’t have to be expensive. All in this is a grand.

awesome... what HOB skimmer would you recommend? I'm probably looking at around 40 gal. tank what HOB filter?
I use a AquaClear 110 and swap sponges twice weekly. This makes cleaning, easy. Just swap sponges.
I use a Coralife 160 for the skimmer.
I use Jebao OW-25 left and right with alternating 30 second wave motion.

Each one of the above was inexpensive and has run past 5 years.

Now mine 48” wide, you want 30”.

So each needs scaled down for 30g, 30”

The AquaClear would be a 50

The skimmer

Coralife Super Skimmer 65 Gallon

And the wave OW-10

That should be the equivalent I beli3ve.
