getting back into the salt world

I am currently in the process of designing and building a salt water tank. Starting off with fish only but will transition to reef over time. This will be a large tank around 700-1000 gallon. I am currently looking for a tank or will end up having to have one built. I need a tank that is see through as it will be view able on three sides. I am looking for a length of about ten foot and width of at least 36" but prefer 48" and height of anywhere between 36"-48"

Nice! I wish I had room for that large of a tank. Also I wish I had money for that large of a tank. Do you have a question? Looking for advice? Or simply trying to rub our noses in it?

:lolspin: I'm just guessing that you'll need to have one built. You should start a build thread in the builds section once you get everything going. I'm sure it would get a lot of attention.

no, I am certainly not trying to rub anyone's nose into it. I have wanted this project for decades now and finally have a chance to do it. Right now I am just looking at options for the display tank. If I can find a good used acrylic or possibly even glass tank that comes close to the size I am looking for it would help with the budget.

Yes the budget is going to be over 10,000 grand for sure, but not all at once and finding a good used tank would help drive down that cost considerably.

I will for sure start taking some pictures once we get the ball rolling and post them in the tank build section.

I did not even consider used since the tank is so large I did not believe they would be out there. Two local reef members came over last night to look at what I was planning and they suggest finding a used tank. Said the large tanks are around more than I would think. They suggest I look at forums and clubs like this one.

I appreciate anyone's feedback, knowledge or suggestions.

What kind of fish are you gonna put in that thing? That sounds like fun and a lot work but well worth it in the long run. Congrats on the start up. Let us know when you start!!

looking to start it off as mostly a fish only tank keeping predator type fish, Lion, wrasse, eels. Eventually as I get more into it will switch it to a reef tank.

Has anyone heard of "customaquariums.com"?

I keep debating on just going with an all glass tank due to less chance of scratch over time.

I would prefer glass for a huge aquarium but i would choose laminated glass(bullet proof glass) instead of normal glass.I consider bullet proof glass cheap if you make it yourself thogh it wont be as clear as acrylic even if you use low iron glass sheets.4 square meters of water isnt huge thogh but at 1 meter tall water column i would still use laminated glass for extra safety.

:fish1: Hi, You might want to triple that $10,000, when everything is done and finished. If I were you I would add more depth, front to back, and less height, say 32 to 36 inches max, as a tall tank is a pain to clean or aqua scape, unless you like to climb in and swim in your tank. :fish1:

I see you have a 600 gallon tank, what are your dimensions .

Yes, I have been debating back and forth on the height. I have been leaning more towards a glass tank I found, 120' x 48" x 36" tall. I like the look of acrylic but worry about the scratches over time.
