getting back into the saltwater hobby

Hello everyone ! I've been out of keeping saltwater tanks for a while now and I'm going to be getting back into it starting with a FOWLR setup. I have a 46 gal bow front that I'll be using, a couple canister filters that I'm going to run, and for now N.O. florescent lighting (will upgrade to T5 shortly). My first question is who in the area has the best prices on some live rock ? looking for some that's already cycled ready to go, don't want to mess with it. And I'm sure this is a loaded question but do you think a skimmer is necessary on a FOWLR ? I don't plan on filling it up with fish so the bio load should be small.

Thanks Danny

I think your best bet for live rock will be on craigslist the LFS around here want 8.99 a pound, at that rate even only getting 30lbs will be a nice $270.

nope nothing here, there are some places in Lakeport, just trying to see what's down that way I know there are more choices there. Not to mention I'm trying to keep the startup down in cost...LOL

I believe Jofish had live rock for around $6 a pound. Caesars got that crappy rock that does not look good to me. As suggested check out Craigslist I saw on there before a guy selling for 2 buck a pound.

thanks guys I just got a hold of a shop in Lakeport, they said they have pukani and tukani $4.99 pound, marshall island live rock $13.99 pound and "real Reef Rock" $6.99 pound. I guess the prices are around the same there as they are down there, but it would cost me less in gas to go to lakeport...

but I'm still looking so if you got any better places let me know THANKS !

Good luck in your search. 2 a pound in sf and San Jose through ppl getting out.

Try marcorocks in the sponsor section of rc. There are some live rock distributors in Texas and Florida.

There's a shop in lakeport? Where? Is there even enough hobbyists to support a store? I know Ukiah used to have one and its been gone for the last 4 years. Let me know since thats part of my territory. Could always use a break stop from work :)

Thanks all for your input.

the shop I called is newer its in the grocery outlet shopping center (lakeport blvd. and main st) south end shops closest to main street. There is another place in Lakeport too on the other end of town just past 11th street on Main St. They are both "pet shops" not specific to water hobby...
