Moved On
so tommorow im planning on moving my stuff from my current tank to my 75g. i was wondering if i should have any concerns. i have a 5" deep sand bed in my current tank and want to know if i have to worry about the sand being stirred up or not. i am also planning on doing a deep sand bed im my 75 as well. any tips or info would be great. thanks everyone. I would be concerned about the sandbed issue. I don't have any advice, but I am sure there are threads on it somewhere. It may be best to use a new sand bed for the new tank.

Why would it be best to use new sand in the tank? I was under the impression that this sand would bring benefitial bacteria and filter feeders to the new setup. Why buy live sand if you have it?

I think that you get an ammonia spike from all the decomposition in the DSB. I would recommend buying new sand and seeding it with the top 1 or 2 inches from the 45. My dsb in my fuge and display definitely have nice black area's of mucky stuff.

i just recently upgraded from a 55 to a 120. i had a 4-5 inches of DSB on my 55 and moved everything to my new 120. i didn't add any sand to the new tank, in short i went from 4-5 DSB to a SSB(2-3). i did all this in one day including my livestock with no deaths or problems with my water para. if you need more info on the process i use LMK. i now have my 120 running for alost a month with no problems and just recently added 3 tangs to my current yello mimic tang, spotted mandarin, a pair of true percs, lawnmower blenny, 2 clown goby, 2 cleaner shrimps, 4 pep shrimps and a bunch of inverts including 3 star fish with no problem.

I will be moving the top 2" of my DSB into the fuge of my new tank. I was told to scoop it out with a dustpan. If I don't find enough sand for the main tank, I may start rinsing the remaining sand in a bucket w/a hose & reuse.

well i just bough 80 lbs or live sand from my lfs. i am going to put that in as the base sand and seed the top of my sand bed with most of my sand from the 45. i had crushed coral and i didn't like that so i put sand on top of it so im just going to take of the top layer until i hit the crushed coral. thanks for all the info people. this place is great for information and i'll tell ya what i can't seem to get enough of it!!! thanks again.....Jake

just use a little of the top layer of the sand jski711. No need for more than two cup fulls of about the first 1/2", you'll have plenty to seed it and you should be good to go.

Sorry to hijack, but it's the same subject. What about rinsing out the old sand from a DSB, in a bucket of FW & reusing?

sure, just don't try to transplant a SB. Rinse what you have, make sure you really rinse it and use a small part of the top layer of the old one. You'll be good to go.

well everything is transfered and as of right now the only thing that i lost was my coral beauty. i think the stress got to her... what a shame. i also discovered that my gbta was in the process of splitting so now i have two gbta's. tank is still cloudy once it clears up im going to take some pics. thanks for all the advice.... jake

I got here too late. My first setup was a 75gal moved from Ft. Sheridan to Oak Park. Took the better part of a day to break down move and set up.

Used every last grain of sand. No issues whatsoever at all.

Planned to do same when I upgraded to 150 just adding more sand but disasters nixed that and I had to dump it all. :( I still miss that old sandbed. And I'll never forget the unique stench ... at exactly 1.25pm on day 3 in rubbermaid tub with air pump. Thanks bigtime to Chris aka Misery for the truck and the arms to help me haul to dumpster!!!

I combined my 2 29 gallon tanks to my 75 gallon, I took all the sand out of each and put them in the 75 and also got another 50 lbs of sand or so and put it in there as well.. The new sand i put on the bottom, and the LS I put on the time. I then transfered all corals/fish over and had no deaths at all.

I upgraded my 55g to a 120g back in February this year. the 55g had a 4 inch SB that was 2.7 years old.....not a bad spot in the whole bed or even a bad smell! Yes i was surprised, as everyone talks about how bad they are...i do disagree, experiece talks on this one.

On the upgrade i did however use a freah 120#'s of sand and added about 25 cups of the old sand on top of that! Going well thus far.

FYI: i have 2 sand sifting stars and about 8 sand snails that are all about 3yrs old now.....who knows if they helped in the success of the SB.......just an FYI.

Good luck on the upgrade! :D
