Getting out of the hobby sale. Part 1 (corals)

You can go check out most of his large corals at Vivid, 30 minutes late and my Purple monster was punked(Just kiding Dave and Jason)! Picked up a couple nice pieces and will be back for some fish. Hope you get back soon Jason and there are still some very nice pieces left. I knew I should have ditched work this morning for a few hours! Very nice setup! Let me know if your friend passes on the bright orange Acans next to the big colony? Thanks, Scott

I hate it when retailer poach corals from hobbiest to resell them at jacked up prices! Shame on vivid! This is a hobbiest forum.

Anyways Jason has some nice stuff. Interested in some acans, Do u have pics of the acans?

So I'm a different kind of hobbyist but I am still a hobbyist. I have an 800 gallon tank that really wanted the purple monster. I didn't steal from the guy.

Dave

Jason...PM'd you regarding the Maxima.

Wouldn't you want to know that your LFS is involved on this level? An informed retailer is a beautiful thing.

Dave I was just funning as I was supposed to pick that piece up and work conflicted earlier in the day. I have bought some nice coral from your store and I do have to say that Dave is a Extreme Hobbyist as it shows in the care he takes in his tanks. His tanks are awesome and it shows that he is not the typical LFS and has top notch stuff. No worries and I can't wait to visit your store when the new Displays are up and running and full of the good stuff:)

I swear I saw that you are sharing a booth with Reef Odyssey at CFM :thumbdown. Dosent that make you a retailer by doing the shows.

I visit Dave's shop at least once a week when ever I have the time and must say he is a huge hobbiest with the sickest collection around by far. 99% of the people on here are for the money part of the hobby than the enjoyment part. Its all about buying a piece cheap, cut up small, sell steep.

Dave shop looks great with the new displays and keep up the great work.

Ok Let's not start arguing here on Jason's thread just drop it vivid is a great store and i've met terry a couple times great guy has hooked it up with frags before. Bump for Jason he's a great guy with some awesome stuff let's get it sold

99% I doubt it is THAT high. 50% maybe... what do I know though. ;)

Agreed... HOPEFULLY less than 50%.

I think stryker's point was that there's a difference between a "guy on the street" collector purchasing the piece and keeping it for their own tank while selling relatively "cheap" frags to other collectors vs. a commercial collector that purchases a piece with the intent to turn around and sell it for a much higher price to the same "guy on the street" that could have gotten it for much less.

But that's the great thing (depending on who you are) about CAPITALISM!!! :D

wow by doing a show makes you a retailer?
"Retail consists of the sale of goods or merchandise from a fixed location, such as a department store, boutique or kiosk, or by mail, in small or individual lots for direct consumption by the purchaser" from wikipedia
terry you are a retailer.

Dave

uhh... i think he is pointing out how your resale value on the coral will be through the roof on what you paid at the coral garage sale. No one accused you of stealing (yet) ;)

(Sorry for keeping this going.)

Stryker, SharkE,

I realize you're not fans of us but you oversimplify what you consider jacked up prices. While hobbyists can resell at lower prices because they have other jobs to pay their bills, stores have more expenses - rent, employees, insurance, equipment, maintenance, electricity, taxes, advertising (such as RC), transportation, etc. I work 6 days a week, 8-12 hours a day and I am by no means rich. Have you ever met a rich fish store owner? I do this because I love it and I am a hobbyist at heart. I introduced myself to Jason as Dave from Vivid Aquariums and he had no issues with me.

Thank you to Jason. You kept a beautiful tank. There were lots of nice coral and fish left. Good luck with the sale.

Thank you to everyone else for your support.

Mods,
Please clean up this sale thread. I copied the posts related to the discussion on another thread. Sorry Jason for detracting from your sale thread.

I am sorry that my post started a conflict and I hope to still consider Jason, Dave, and Terry friends. I am in this for the fun and aspire to have tanks that can be as awesome as yours someday! I have been consumed by this hobby and have to admit that growing the colors in my home display is very fulfilling and takes my mind off other things like running a business and paying the bills. I make my living elsewhere and this is a hobby although it would be very cool to have my own coral Morph someday:)

Jason I am sorry I started the derailing of your thread and thank you for the Plate and the Tyree Red. I am ready to pick up the fish we talked about when you are and promise to give them a good home.

Jason still had a bunch of nice stuff and his prices were very fair.

Dave I will still shop at Vivid and I look forward to seeing the new system up and running. The 800 is impressive and I am sure the new one will be better! Best store for coral I have seen in California if you want the very nice stuff! The other thing I like about Dave is he does not try and light his coral with LED's and sell you something that looks different under conventional lighting. He sells real COLOR and I know his electric bill must be insane!

Terry I hope to see you at CFM, it has been awile and I thank you for your help and some of the colors in my tank. I would like to finish up our trade and I have been saving a nice spot for my Large Space invaders frag:)

I consider myself an extreme hobbyist and I spend money on coral and equipment and like having the best colors, I have paid way too much for coral and I am just as much part of the problem. I can say my coral buying days are slowing down and I have enough of the nice stuff to work out good trades, but what can I say I am an ADDICT.

It has been 1 day since I bought coral and I am ready for CFM!

The rest of you reefers looking for a good deal on coral please give Jason(Dooly) a PM as I cant pick up my fish until he sells his coral!

"Like sands through the hourglass so are the Days of our Reefs"

No more drama!

It would probably be in Dooly's interest to just start a new thread. Chopping this thread up seems like more work than it's worth. FTR ANYONE can buy here.
