getting rid of asterina starfish

I was thinking of getting one then when all the stars were gone placing him to help others in their tank. I only have a few stars but that is too many.

They can eradicate stars pretty quickly, if you only have a few, you'll have to suppliment their diet with chocolate chip stars to keep them from starving.

OK, looks like my shrimp have gotten rid of most/all of the stars and I need to get a chocolate chip star, if I can catch them I need to reduce the number of my harlequins too

bumping this thread up, ive got a big outbreak in my 57 gallon tank, picked up a harlequin today and put him in, picked a few stars out and put them in the bag when i was acclimating and he grabbed them right away. didnt see the stars as a problem until i started putting zoas in this tank and noticed they were eating my red people eaters, have since moved them to my other DT after a close inspection. if anyone wants any harlequin food in south florida shoot me a pm, ive got loads lol

Had a huge asterina starfish invasion about a couple months ago and I used a fish net to scoop them up from the glass and they would fall into the net. Got about 60-80 each time.

Wish you can get a harlequin because my single one ate the hundreds and I see only 5-10 on the rocks from time to time

Update.... Had put a hariquen in a few days after my post. I have not seen him since. No sign of a dead harlequin. Stars still there attacking some not too healthy zoas. My question is can a anemone eat a hariquen? I'm thinking of getting a other harlequin.

harlequin shrimp all I have to say,10 days gone!! hundreds in our 300 & 2 shrimp gone & sell them to other reefers.

best 50.00 dollars u will spend!

Took almost a month for my harlequin to come out. One sign I knew my shrimp was still alive because my starfish retreated to the front glass at night. I believe they are usually nocturnal because now I only see mine when the lights are off

hmmm, going to look for mine after the lights are off now, was looking for him but the stars are still retreating to the top of the glass so i feel comfortable hes still there

Might look into this, as most of mine I see are on my rocks and I can't get to them all. Do the shrimp also eat serpent stars??

Wrasses

Wrasses

I have two tanks hooked up to the same sump. My display tank has very few of the little buggers, and has a (melanurus) wrasse. Funny, I never see him eat them but will often see them falling to the ground. He also has been seen with bristle worms and the little brittle stars in his mouth. My frag tank, without the wrasse is virtually overrun with the little mfers. They don't bother the frags however. Will get a few Harlequins for the frag tank. There are not many little stars in the larger tank, only see a few large ones.
BTW the melanurus wrasse is beautiful and very active, last one I had swam into the exhaust when I did a water change SIGH, but the replacement acts the same and grows fast.

Asterinas are eating all the coraline from the left side of my tank.

On the right side - still untouched - I have a small Zoas colony, and I don't want to let them to cross the tank...

I started to hand-picking them, and so far, 80 and counting. I'm quite frustrated with that, because it take so long to cover the rock escape with coraline and now it's all bleached. The tank is looking awful.

I'm concerned with the Harlequim shrimp, after it eats all the asterinas. How to feed? I don't want to let it starve to death...

Sell/trade the shrimp or feed it a chocolate chip starfish occasionally

Hey, forgot to mention that u need to make sure u drop the starfish near where the shrimp is.....chocolate chips eat corals.

Harlequin just arrived yesterday. This night I checked out and hundreds of asterinas on the glass! It's amazing how they sense the presence of their predator.

Now a question: should I remove these with a net or let as food to the shrimp?

The one I got is quite small, and I have no idea about their appetite!

I just scrape mine off the glass. I have a small harlequin in a 225g and it is enough to keep my asterina population down.

It is amazing how the starfish know though
