We don't use aluminum wire at all in NY anymore except very rarely in larger feeders where we don't splice it, it has to be Hi Pressed (or squashed together)
The problem with aluminum is only where it is terminated.
After a while it forms a coating that increases resistance causing it to heat up. There are things you can do to prevent it but it is safer to use copper. The cost is not that great to go with aluminum.
Yes you can only use 15 amps if you have #14 wire.
