I'm looking at getting a reactor for my 45 gal mainly for tumbling gfo. the problem i see is that the reactor (deluxe at brs) holds 2 cups of gfo but recommended for my tank size is .7 cups (with gfo calculator). anyone know what i should do. i didn't want to add carbon to it but if i have to i have no other choice. tia

Just run less. You only need to run the amount needed for your tank. Also, BRS makes a good reactor. Always have heard good things about them.

sweet. thank you for the reply. i just thought it might look funny, a full size reactor with like a half a cup of gfo in it lol

I would get two reactors - one for the GFO (however much you might need) and the other for carbon. IME, mixing the two will work, but because they require replacement at different intervals, it is a waste of $$$ to combinr them.

True but I run GFO for a month the add carbon for a month change the both add GFO and run it for a month. I only run carbon for every other month

The carbon also is better if used separately because the flow of both is different and even in a dual reactor it can get clogged. With two reactors they can be adjusted simultaneously

I have the BRS reactor and run GFO on the bottom and Carbon on the top for my 40B w/ 20L sump and has been working great. You want the carbon on top and packed in tightly while the gfo on the bottom can be in there loosely. The reactor comes with a separating sponge for this purpose. I believe there may be a video as well on their site showing this.
