GFO dumped in tank now 2 fish have Popeye

Three days ago I noticed my GFO had moved up to the top of the media reactor and dumped the brown "dust" in the rank. My filter socks were dark brown. I cleaned the filters and added a poly filter. The next day my flame angel came down with Popeye in both eyes and can't see out if either. Today my emperor angel has Popeye in one eye. Water perimeters in range, nitrates <10. I thought Popeye would heal on its own with good water quality. Now I'm not do sure. Setting up a hospital tank tonight and will move them tomorrow. Wondering what the best treatment is.

I guess it's possible the GFO particles would have irritated any part of the fish they came in contact with, including the eye. You can try epsom salt (1 Tablespoon per 5 gals) to relieve the swelling.

This /\ as the easiest, most gentle. Keep in mind that if both eyes are traumatized, the fish may not be able to see at all. The attempt to orally feed a fish with this type of severe condition is most likely impossible. Therefore, the fish should be carefully moved to a QT (quarantine tank) and treated with a broad spectrum topical antibiotic, such as skin absorbed kanamycin sulfate based antibiotics like Aquatronics' Kanacyn or Spectrogram, as well as Neomycin, and Maracyn or Maracyn-Two (which may no longer be available).

Ebsom salt doesn't affect the water chemistry of the tank? I have corals in it. No SPS but LPS and softies. I'm going to Cancun / Isla majures in 12 days. My daughter is house sitting Thanks for the advice.

Epsom salt is just magnesium sulfate, so if you do two part to raise your mag then you are already dosing it from time to time. However, snorvich's suggestion to QT and treat with antibiotics is a good alternative.

Did a fresh water dip (RO with adjusted PH) and a bunch of round parasites fell off. You could actually see them coming out from around the eyeballs. They are tiny clear/whitish.pinkish things. I'll try and post a pic in a bit. I have the two infected fish in a quarantine tank now. Was going to treat with Furan-2 but not sure if that is the right med for parasites. A little advise would be much appreciated. Also the other fish in the tank seem fine. Is this something that will eventually manifest to the other fish?

Not the best pic but you get the idea.

Sounds like flukes. You'll want to treat with Prazipro, a de-wormer. Any fish that shared water with the infected need to be treated also. Prazi is "reef safe", save tube worms/feather dusters.

So I can just add it to the DT then. Already have the two infected fish in quarantine so I will leave them there until they recover. I will get some Prazipro tomorrow and treat the DT. Fingers crossed. I leave for vacation in 10 days. would be nice if things were heading in the right direction by then.

Obviously too late for this problem, but would a UV prevent this type of problem in the future. I will be moving everything to a new 220 next month and was thinking of adding an Emperor Aquatics UV to the system. Wasn't sure if it was worth it but now am thinking maybe it is.

No. A UV won't prevent fish diseases. It may kill any parasites/bacterium that get sucked in, but they just reproduce again so a UV never completely eradicates them. The only way to prevent a recurrence of something like this is to adopt a strict QT protocol for each & every fish.

Well, sadly the Flame Angel didn't make it past the first day of Prazipro treatment after the fresh water dip. Too bad as he was a fish that made the move with me from my old house into my new house 8 years ago. The Emperor Angel seems to be doing good. His affected eye is still a little cloudy and he appears to be (at least temperately) blind in that eye. But it is back to normal size and the stripes and markings on the eyeball are slowly starting to reappear. He is eating good. Mysis shrimp, Krill, seaweed sheets & flake. won't touch frozen cubes of any kind right now so I'm avoiding them so i do not pollute the quarantine tank. I soak the mysis & krill in Selcon. Leaving for Mexico next Tuesday and my daughter will be house (fish & Dog) sitting. I think I will wait until I get back and decide if a second treatment will be necessary. I will be moving everything into a new 220 gallon in mid May so I am just going to keep the Emperor in the quarantine tank until then.
