I run them separately, They may exhaust at differnt times. . Haven't seen a need for gfo in thte last 5 months, though. Change them monthly on averagae ; gfo may need a much shorter change period if PO4 is high.I do 1% dialy water changes.
I'm running a cup each in my 80gal bare bottom.I think my water is to clean though.Do you think if I cut back to 1/2 cup each I may see improvement?I currently feed twice a day and dose acropower once a week. All my levels are in your range for reef tanks that I use off an article you once posted.Only one that doesn't is po4 which is always zero on my hanna.Everything is doing good except pale sps colors.

So do I. In my opinion, modular approach is good because one feeding pump fluidising both GFO and GAC becomes a single point of failure. You can also adjust pumps' speeds independently according to the media you are using.
The reason I ask is beacause I've been changing my gac out more often in hopes to help whatever's going on in my tank about every week to 2 and I kinda use a lot I hope I'm not over doing it.… sorry op don't mean to derail your thread
Using less and changing it more often is a fine plan. Yes, you can overdo, both GFO and less so, GAC, but changing more often is just more work and possibly less efficient (more expensive) use of them if they get removed before depletion..
