I used a small Rio pump (400gph IIRC) and that ran perfectly with Carbon and GFO. You don't want the whole thing to tumble as that can break up the carbon and force small pieces into your display. As SleepyJ said above, as long as your dispersion plate is acting properly and you aren't seeing channeling through the media the top layer should tumble gently.
I have both GFO and carbon in my reactor (TLF also) and the GFO ends up on the bottom layer and the carbon tumbles on top. I think that is pretty much the norm. As Staninct said you don't want it churning too much or it will end up as dust in your display.
