GFO overdose...

Well, I went off of what BRS said to dose and now after more research I am seeing this is way wrong. My birds nests are reacting very poorly to this as is my rainbow monti, but my others are doing ok .. I have a 24 gallon nano and it had me put in 6 tbl of gfo..I am guessing I stripped everything from the water...I was using rowaphos...I have since removed the rowaphos down to 3tbl which was recommended by a local reefer, still not sure if that is too much, I am using a nextreef MR1 reactor. I did my regular feedings last night. What can I do to try and counter act this..I am seeing it hit the base of the birds nests hard. Is there anything I can do? I have heard about something with amino acids, but was not sure and also dipping them.

interesting, im having the same issues with my rainbow monti. All the other montis look good. I have no idea at the issue but will follow along

How did it affect your monti? I changed my GFO last month and some greens on my sps faded, but my rainbow monti never looked better. I just increased feeding over the next few days to help colors recover.

Everything I have read from fellow reefers, well most reefers is if you run too much GFO you can strip the water column of too much po4. Corals need trace amounts of it and by overdosing GFO you can do this. BRS told me to put in twice the amount I should have had in there.

I have done that, I reduced it down to 3 tablespoons in my reactor. Not sure if it needs to be reduced by more. I fed rods food yesterday and also fed oyster feast to the tank as well. Is there something else I should use to target the corals with or is the oyster feast good enough?

I know some people swear by oyster feast. I just starting using it so I cant give any advice on that.

Feed, use 1/2 the gfo recommend and do a bug water change. Time will take care of things. I have done the same thing!

Gfo itself does not affect corals, however it can strip the water column very quickly if too much is used initially and that can affect sps.
You have to start slowly with it, gradually increasing the amount.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the brs gfo calculator is meant for their brand of gfo only. I used to use another brand of gfo and then switched to brs's brand. The old brand recommended that I use around .5 cups per 60 gallons for theirs, while brs recommends around 1 cup per 60 gallons for theirs. That being said I usually only run around 50%-70% of what's recommended.

When I first started using GFO my milli and monti looked pretty bad. After about ten days all was back to normal. I wish you good luck.

I'm having similar issues with my BRS HC GFO. I started with the reccommended dose and I had a few SPS start to RTN and the corals that survived started to lose color. After a couple of weeks the colors started to come back. I recently changed that batch of GFO and used half of what I initially used and the same thing happened. I had a few more sps start to RTN. My mistake was I should have bought a hanna checker to monitor the amounts of phosphates present and how much/how fast the GFO was removing phosphates. I just purchased the Hanna checker today and will test my phosphates when I get home. I also stopped running the GFO until I test the phosphates. IMO without testing, I believe I stripped the phosphates too fast, being that my tank is less than 3 months old and not heavily stocked.
