GFO Reactor Vs. Chemi-Pure

I have a RSM130 and I have the media basket with chemi-pure in it. Been having a problem with algae lately and thinking of installing a reactor. Any input would help...thanks

I'd ask this question under chemistry, or advanced topics. I THINK the really smart guys there will say GFO > chemipure.

Don't take my word though!

Chemipure Elite helps to a point, but you will get better results from a GFO reactor. Measuring of phosphates can be a futile effort as they can be consumed from the water column by algae and show 0 on a test kit. I use a Two Little Fishies reactor, they are cheap and I have had great results with mine.

I don't think there's enough GFO in Chemipure Elite to do much so get a reactor or put some GFO in a bag. You might also try some form of carbon dosing.

hey there dude,
i used to run chemi pur elite and it worked well for a while until my tank was almost fully stocked. Ange gave me the advice to get the TLF 150 gfo reactor and i couldnt be happier with it. in a matter of a month all my hair algae and pest algae was damn near gone, my phosphates were at 0. its a great investment and i couldnt be happier with it and couldnt thank ange enough for his advice and help.

I am havin some HA issues also. I was feeding frozen foods daily. Think that may have been the culprit. Gonna dose with some peroxide to remedy the HA at first then throwin on the TLF with GFO. How often does the GFO get changed out? Does it tumble in the reactor or not?

Thanks for the kind words, and glad to hear it worked out for you as well as it did for me.

I feed frozen daily and have no such issues (even before a reactor). Watch out for that peroxide, it's a spot treatment type thing and is only a bandaid for the real solution which is reducing your nutrients. Look into a good skimmer and the GFO reactor for a long term solution. And don't broadcast does peroxide for sure!

And don't expect immediate results when you start running a reactor, I always say "the only things that happen fast in reefing are bad things". Mine took a good couple of months to take full effect. I change my GFO about once a month. It should tumble slightly at the top only. More turbulence will pulverize the media and you will end up with dust all over your tank.

FWIW, a clean toothbrush and turkey baster are just as effective as peroxide with no ill side effects.

Anything wrong with running the reactor and chemipure at the same time? I also have purigen running with some chaeto

Two people in the reef chemistry forum that are WAY smarter than most basically call chemipure at the besr overpriced or the worst pure snake oil.

I bought like 5 bottles of it before i did my research.

What i got out of reading is that it'll never last as long as it claims. Carbon is carbon and needs to be changed out.

In my Solana chamber two I use:

filter floss
purigen, phosban
chemi-pure elite

My tank is only 4+ months old, however I've had great results the last 6-8 weeks.
