GFO types

I read the sticky on GFO and it said as I saw also there that brands are all not the same.
As anyone over time tried same of these brands on the market?

Is there ones that give a good job for your money and ones that are over priced?

I saw one thing as they all do not use the same amount to gallon dose does that mean the ones that use less per gallon are better?

We don't have any hard data available on how well the various products work. As usual, we get conflicting reviews. The BRS products seem to get okay comments on average. I've used PhosBan and Phosphate Killer, and they seemed fine to me, but I didn't have a big problem to solve.

When you used PhosBan and Phosphate Killer what dose did you use per gallon as I see they have two different ways?
I am using BRS and as you said okay was looking for save money as use more per gallon with this.

My .02. We were using Phosban years ago. Started buying bulk from LFS. Got some great deals on-line and recently bought Aquamaxx GFO. Great price. Never noticed much difference concerning capacity. We use 150 grams for a 125. Aquamaxx has been in reactor for about 3 weeks and I got a .06, about average.

thank you for your help. I looking at how they all have different amount to use to a gallon. Aquamaxx as 1.2 grams to one gallon.

I kept the fish count low in my tanks, so I never had much in the way of algae or other problems, except when I allowed Caulerpa to get a foothold in some tanks. That took a bit of time to resolve. I ran the GFO as a safety net, and I used the same amount for either product.

Okay as thank you for showing me as same amount for either product. Now as you said the Caulerpa what did you do to get it from main tank I asking as I have refugium and looking for ways if when a piece gets in main tank what to do to stop it.

I just kept up with a bit of pruning and kept running the GFO. Eventually, the Caulerpa faded away.

I use the BRS HC GFO because of the amount that is recommended for my system, and the size of the reactor. In my system I would need 3 cups of the granular GFO vs 1 1/2 cups of the HC GFO. The standard BRS reactor will take the 3 cups of media, but it's a snug fit, and I'd need a larger pump to keep it fluidized. I usually get 2+ months of use out of one refill using the HC GFO, where the standard granular GFO will only last between 6 to 7 weeks before I need to replace it, in my system.

Is anyone doing this Regenerating of there GFO? Is there grades of GFO that do better in Regenerating?

The physically stronger forms seem to hold up better under regeneration. The pellets were supposed to be good, although they seem to be hard to find, and might have been discontinued. People seem successful with the BRS products and regeneration, especially the HC version. I've never done the regeneration personally, so I can't do much more than report the reviews posted here.
