Giesers Mantis Shrimp (with pics)

Gieser was kind enough to give me Mantis #2 that he caught. I picked him up yesterday. He is exactly 1 1/2" long. He went into my refugium, and has staked his claim in a hole near my front glass so I can watch him. I heard him popping this morning, and can only feel for the nuisance crabs that had been banished from my display tank to the fuge. I am sure some of them are already a smashed mess. He seems to be happy so far, exploring all the rockwork, and checking things out. I am glad to have the little guy, thanks!

I tried to get some really close up macros, but the little guy was running around his little tupperware container so fast, I could not get a good shot. I had to zoom back a bit and get some half blurry pics....ha

By the way, I have to say Gieser has an amazing tank setup going, and can't wait to see more of it.

It is a Nikon D40 that I got last week. I am still trying to learn how to use it, as I am a camera noob. It came with a Nikon 18-55mm lens for general purpose work, and I also bought a Quantaray 70-300 Macro lens. It has a macro switch on the lens and I can get pretty good close pics, but I don't know if I would call it a 'true' macro lens. But it was cheap and I wanted it to fool around with. I hope sometime later this year to get a real Macro lens, like the Nikon 105mm or something similar. Then I can get those real closeups, where you see people focusing in on single polyps.



Here is a example that I took with it the first day I got the camera:
(An RC member PM'ed me when they saw this pic, and told me that if I changed the aperture setting I could get all the branches in focus and not just the front branches. Something about 'depth of field'. I have so much to learn....lol
