Based off that one picture, what do you think this anemone is? The tentacle length imo points towards Gigantea but then again I have never heard of or seen a red Gigantea in captivity. Obviously we won't know for sure without a clear shot of the verrucae but lets at least make a logical guess. What do you think?
 
No, the anemone is from a website and there are a bunch of us trying to figure out what type of carpet this is. I was just trying to get a more organized thread so we could attempt to figure out the identifications of this species.

If it wasn't for the tentacle length, I would definately say Haddoni. I wonder if anyone else has owned or seen a Haddoni with this tentacle lenth?

I emailed the website asking for a clear identifiation on the red carpet. Hopefully they will reply to my email and clarify it.

sometimes the tentacles on my do that but only when the sun is setting and the halide above it goes out. so of course it could be a haddoni

Yeah but in the picture the lights are on.
 
If it were an unhealthy anemone I would lean towards gigantea, but, the fact that it looks to be in superb health I would say haddoni, otherwise the tentacles would be much longer. Also, not that this is a definitive indicator, but it does seemingly prefer the sandy bottom as opposed to the rocks in the background, just like a haddoni.

I do hope I'm wrong though, I've seen a lot of reds, just never a gigantea. :bigeyes:

s. haddoni .

the radial gap between rows of tentacles look like gig's. (obviously would help to see how close they come to the mouth or the nonadhesive v.), haddoni tentacles (especially when new) can be thin and long (vs. short and bulbous), and will have a radial gap .

did any of you ask the shop if the tentacles vibrate ?
 
I saw this anemone at Ming's last week. It has a purple shine that the camera is not doing it justice. It looks more like crimson/fuchsia.

I too am confused about it's ID. I have seen about half dozens of red/pink/crimson/purple anemones like this one. They got the characteristics of S.Haddoni and S.gigantea. It loves flows in mine tank. The verrucae are more like S.gigantea to me because they are much more prominent and different colors from its trunk tissues. Some one else told me they are S.haddonis.

I have kept/keeping other red S.haddonis without much problem, but these guys are much, much harder. I too hope it goes to an expert so it has a chance to thrive.

Please excuse my "carpet" inexperience, but what makes a gigantea so hard to rear? Does it need specific water chemistry, or is it difficult in getting it to eat, and/or other unique husbandry?

Well first of all, S. Gigantea are very hard to come by in some areas and when they do come in, some people frantically buy them not knowing what they are getting into. Lots of times, S. Gigantea do bad in shipping and in pet stores and tend to slowly die. By the time it reaches the person's house, its usually too late. Even reefers that have a tank full of sps corals that are thriving have failed at keeping S. Gigantea. Gigantea anemones require very strong random flow. When I say strong I mean strong. Gigantea anemones require pristine water quality, stablility and intense lighting(MH or T5s). The real trick is to buy a healthy Gigantea in the first place. But there are many that provide Giganteas with the best of conditions and still fail trying to rear one. It CAN be luck of the draw sometimes just as much as skill in keeping one alive. Your best chance of keeping a S. Gigantea alive is to buy it from someone that already owned it in their tank. This is because it has acclimated to tank life and has proven that it can survive in the type of enviroment we provide. Nonetheless, they are still extremely difficult.

That was a sloppy explanation of your question but I think ya get the point. ;)
