Gimmito's 450 L-Shaped Display

...drilled 100 holes for the drip tray.

Looking good !
Really like the drip tray idea (old wet dry style).
I was thinking of doing something like that but with egg crate below to house live rock rubble.
IIRC its good for oxygen exchange ?

Much easier to change out than filter socks for sure.

Cant wait to see this build finished you have put alot of great ideas into this its going to be an awesome set up.

The drip tray does resemble a old wet dry doesn't it ? lol. I might add some live rock to help diffuse any residue micro bubbles and as you mentioned create more oxygen exchange. I would love to see pic's of your version when you're done.

I'm all for easier work in this hobby. ;)

Almost there...I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I got a chance to finish hooking up the skimmer. The skimmer is fed directly from one of the drains and dialed in via a 1" ball valve.

I also got to work on the standpipes on the right overflow box. I'm doing a Herbie standpipe method, which simply is one standpipe will be the main drain and the other acts as a backup/emergency drain. The main drain is about 8" below the water line and the secondary drain is about a 1/4" below the waterline. You might notice couplings on both standpipes, it's similiar to a skimmer standpipe and will allow me to adjust the standpipe 1 3/8" up or down. The standpipes will be controlled by ballvalves to dial them in and eliminate the dreaded "gurgling sound."

Pic of right rear return...please excuse the dirty acrylic...too tired to clean it.

Seriously?

It's just nice to know you're human after all.

Nice clean build. Love the wetboxes for getting flow to dead areas. I think the collective ingenuity of hobbyists has done more than all the R&D of manufacturers could ever do. It's nice to see innovation is alive and well.

I have just re-read this thread from the start again, cracking build so far Gimmito. This is going to be a lovely tank when you are done.

Thanks d3hree...almost there. Mind if I ask what is the typical cycling period used in the UK ? I've heard of many European Reefers who typically wait 6 months before adding any animals.

IMO cycling is all about the numbers. There is no time frame, some folks have cycled in a few days, others like you say have had to endure 6 months.
I would always suggest waiting for zero nitrates. After 10-14days of zero nitrates then CUC can be added, and stock can be slowly introduced.

I love your quarantine tank btw, is there anyway of isolating any of the induvidual tanks?..It looks from your pictures that they all flow into one another. It would be handy if you could isolate one or two of them.

Good advice, there's so many ways to cycle a tank. I agree that zero nitrates and slowly stocking the tank is a must. I really want to try the 6 months cycle recommended by Calfo and Pro, we'll see if I can hold out that long. ;)

Thanks for the compliment. The QT does flow into one another. I had to plumb them from the side due to space contraints (which also doesn't allow me to isolate them individually). I might try and plumb the top QT to be on/off line and use it to QT corals before placing them in the frag tank.

I climbed in the tank and took a pic of the standpipes I did the other day. I actually have quite a bit of room in the overflow boxes and will try putting the Tunze Streams in there first.

Of course I couldn't take a picture of one right overflow box without showing the left one done also....looks like it will be "water test weekend."
