GIRS Feature Tank

Before this section gets started I think we need to find someone that wants to take this job on. I would hate to see 2 pages of discussion go to waste after one tank gets posted to the website and everyone loses interest or gets too busy to post the next tank.

As for opt in or opt out... I say get this started with the willing individuals first and maybe put it in the plans for next year to draw names at the first meeting.

To address the "Crappy" tank idea... I see the thought process from a marketing point of view, but I can also see the benefit of not having only top notch tanks on the site. I believe all FTOTM should be archived on the site and I think every member should be able to put a picture or two of their tank in a member profile. This would allow anyone visiting the site to see the diversity of the club and not just the FTOTM.

I think that we need to announce pryor to a meeting that we will be drawing names for the TOTM for that YEAR....put all the current members names in a hat and draw 12....then after the first 12 are drawn and recorded in front of 30 people i think we should draw another set of 12 just for backup in case for some reason any of the first 12 didn't want to or couldn't participate.....this gets rid of the voting, the worries about popularity contests, and pretty much all the s**t throwing that usually comes about with things like this. I really think that the club and its members should try and get a better understanding of each other and each others tanks, we can't compete with an RC TOTM ....NOONE in this club has anything near it it either shear size or corals, so lets bring this back to the middle class world and have some fun with it and just remember its all about the love for the ocean not who has the coolest lights , or coral......it about doing our part to help preserve it

Well said!

WOW! I go to work and everything breaks loose! :D

I don't think anyone is planning on this being a poplularity contest. We alll just want to see what everyones tanks look like!

As for the opt in, opt out, etc...

Instead of picking people at random and giving them the opp. to opt out. And if people don't think we'll get many volunteers, how about we post a thread asking who DOESN'T want their tank posted. Then you pull their names out of the hat. That may save some time.

I don't like the idea of pulling a years worth at a time. Especially when 95% of us are on here anyway. A lot of things can change in a year.

I would just post a thread everytime you want a new tank featured asking if anyone doesn't want their tank included and go from there.

KEEP IT EASY! THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN AND INFORMATIVE!!!

I just figured if you could pull all 12 at once it would save 11 more huge discussions, I do like the idea about pulling the people who don't want to be in it out from the git go.....maybe instead of pulling all 12 at once we could pull 3 or 4 kind of an annual thing, it seems that everytime we post any kind of thread about anything involving a decision for the club it turns into a 15 page screaming match and doesn't solve anything.........maybe the club as a whole can have a tank of the month with people who are interested and then to make people feel more involved we could post a TOTM for each area, something small, maybe just pics of that persons tank or tanks and maybe a pic or 2 of there favorite coral, help get the new members some involvement.

TOTM

TOTM

This is an interesting thread.. Sorry I have not had time to read it till now..

Tank of the month is a great idea.. There are not favorites.. Everyone has their opinon.. Everyone can vote.. It is not a political debate here.. Just show off your tank and share with everyone how you did it...

We are all adults here so I would hope we do not have to worry about the little bickering back and forth that this could cause. It is simply a way to show off a tank and for everyone else to BS about it :) Isn;t that what we are about anyway :)

It will be nice to showcase tanks on our site to draw in even more members...

I think Bob and Jason have thrown out some great ideas and of course everyones input is very much appreciated.. But lets not over think it. There are plenty of good examples about how to run this.. IE ReefCentrals tank of the month... Also Mike Paletta's book has good examples of how to break down the inner workings of your tank. So lets have fun.. Drink more beer and star at crazy colored sticks :)

Okay lets do this thing!

Whos going first already?

I would but I want new lights for my tank first.

How about making a thread called "who would like to have their tank featured on the website?" then wait a bit then randomly select from the list. Also their should be some sort of form made for the person to fill out about the details of their tank. Thent heres the matter of pics. Do we have a designated photagrapher willing to travel all over to do the pics? Or how should that work?

Are we going to allow people who have a reef business to be featured, or would this be unethical?

Brad

If they are a reef club member, it's a personal tank, and the feature does not advertise, then I don't see a problem with it.

Just my opinion
