I look at this club kinda like my college fraternity. A social organization that had business needs. The BOD should take care of the business needs & different members volunteer for other duties/ chores. One position I would love to see is a membership officer mainly in charge of recruiting & retaining members.
Craig Johnston
This hits the nail on the head. Where were you last night Craig?
I understand that we do not want monthly member meetings to be board meetings... As Craig pointed out the board has board meetings to keep on track and plan. The members still have their regular free flowing laid back meeting.
To succeed the club needs a structure. With a strong structure the club is not relying on any one indiviual to survive and move forward. Structure is in the background and will not affect what the regular member sees except to allow for a professional and smooth flowing experiance. Structure is what allows the club to get a lot done without anyone getting burnt out and structure would make threads like this disappear by placing everyone on the same page.
When I say WE (the BOD) failed last year I am not refering to any member meetings we had. I am refering to the fallout from losing a president mid-term and our inability to reach our goal of having this club straightened out and better than we found it when we took over. If we would have had a structure to work with, the loss of a president would not have slowed the club progress one bit. We could have jumped in to fill the gap and kept heading down the path that was planned a year in advance... Instead we ran around with our heads cut off, trying to see what we could salvage, and ended a strong year on a weak note. That is what I was refering to. The speakers and auctions were great.
I normally reserve my discussions, like those found in this thread, for direct email, but the problem I have been emailing everyone about for the last 3 years is here and getting worse. We have an opportunity, as a club, to fix the problem NOW and move forward.
As I have said repeatedly, to the board and both presidents, I offer my experiance in club by-law and structure planning to the club. In the last 2 years I helped a failing alumni organization of over 1,500 students and an unknown amount of alumni grow from a $17,500 debt and a colapsing organization to one that has gotten back in the black by $25,000 and will soon be branching to 3 states. I have seen this road we are on and I want to help fill the pot holes and pave the way to a smooth ride for the future.
