GIRS Spring Frag Auction

Hey everyone we are discussing the idea of having two frag auctions a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. What we need from the members is there input on this. Would this be something you guys want??? You tell us .....thanks Jason

Think zombie voice "FRAGS, FRAGS, me want FRAGS"

Ya I am all for it. We should come up with a more streamlined auction setup though

I like the auction and have been begging for a second one for the last 3 years. So, I vote yes... :p

As for format I think we should keep it auction style and swaps can happen on their own as they always have. That way we can still raise a little cash for the club and have an organized format that allows everyone a chance at the more rare corals some bring to the auctions. Minimums would be a way to make sure no seller feels like they got ripped off, but at that point we are looking at a frag garage sale... Also not a bad idea.

Garage Sale would mean you rent a table from the club and sell everything you bring at a preset price. The only real downside is that the first person to an item gets it. Could lead to hard feelings and a black friday rushing mentality.

I'm all in for 2 a year.

The garage sale thing kind of has it's ups and downs as Travis stated. On the plus side is you could get some of the stores in IA to possibly rent a table and try selling some of their stuff as well.

I like the auction idea a little better though. It gives everyone a little more equal opportunity.

What are some suggestions to make it more streamlined? What were previous problems? Sorry I haven't had a chance to make it to one yet. :(

I am fine with an auction if we maybe break up the items from each seller a little more, 5 from each seller, then next seller , or something similar. I know some of the later sellers at the last auction had a hard time pawning their stuff off. I sold less then half of the stuff I brough teh last auction due to being late on the list.

I think if we do an auction it will be more along the lines of the way we use to do it. Everyone places there frags, sets a minimum price on a sheet of paper and bidders walk around and bid on what they want. Takes alot less time and effort. The last auction went good for trying a new idea but i think the old way might be easier. Unless someone has an easier proven method.

^^^^ I like that format^^^^

All in all we know what the high dollar stuff is. If we could get people to auction the Rare LE stuff and then have people be a little more realistic with there gallon bag of Kenya trees or xenia. I sure peole still want the more common stuff but we could "swap/garage sale" sell that stuff.

Ah, I didn't realize there was a switch in auction format...

Yeah, I really like the silent auction method. If you want to mix the three methods together, garage sale tables, silent auction, and live auction for the more desired items that might also work well. As long as it doesn't get too confusing.

Garage Sale= Common Items that sellers have multiples of or are fine with a set price

Silent Auction= for those that want to auction their semi common items

Live Auction= Highly desired items

Or just keep it simple and silent auction the whole lot like we used to.

I'm down. I don't know that I'd like the garage sale style... I dont think you would get as good of deals. I vote silent auction... or maybe we could do both? let the seller pick what they want... I'm sure the LE and high $ stuff would do better in the normal auction.

Last years format went good for the accounting side because it was very easy to add up at the end but it was not fair for the later sellers. I like the silent auctions the best but you will have to come up with an easier way to tally everything up at the end. Even with getting everyone out of the room at Dan's place that one year it was still a nightmare!

Who decides what is a "highly desirable item?" Once that is figured out I think that can be a great way to keep everything going while the silent bidding is going on. There can also be some live auctioning going on while a few board members total everything up from the silent auction...just to keep everyone interested.

I think this should be held at a very large place....like a hotel conference room. We can have a snack table...vendor table...dry goods area...ect. Heck, even invite other clubs from other states. You may want to contact Jeff Schence(sp). I talked to him briefly about where the freshwater guys hold theirs but I forgot where he told me.

These are just a few of my ideas. Can't wait!

I like the idea of a variety of the three. Do we set a limit on the number of corals a seller can sell in the live auction? It might be easier to limit the number of corals they can sell live, instead of telling people their 15# of xenia isnt rare.

Im in for 2 auctions a year. I think the silent auction is by far the best way to do it. I think throwing in a half dozen live auctions might be nice. Nothing to much. For the live auction, I think it should be on a voluntary basis only. Maybe limit it to one or two corals per seller.

I also like the silent auction with some live ones thrown in. I have only been to the one @ Hinch's. I liked it. Like Bob said we need a big place, There were corals sitting on top of corals. One thing we can do is have a limit on the number of zenia, gsp, and other very common items. I think there was 50 bags of GSP when I was there. We could limit the common stuff to 15 items with each member only able to bring 2 in the common categories. I dont know how much a meeting room is at a hotel but it would be nice & big. I could have a fall one @ my house & have a ton of room in the garage if anyone wanted.

I didn't make it to the auction last summer so I have no opinion on it. However, I was at the auction held at Hinch's and I would say that went over well so I will vote for the silent auction.
