Glass Drilling question

I would like to drill a hole for a bulkhead in my 37 gallon frag tank. One problem is it's full and I really dont wanna take it down. Can I empty half the tank and drill it out???? I will put something on the inside to collect the shards of glass. Also Does anyone have a bit to do this before I go out and get one??? Let me know. Ben

I have done it on a 29g with no problems. I drained it about 1/3 of the way and drilled from the inside. I used the bit I got from Lau** on ebay for $10.
I drilled a tank a few weeks ago with the bit that Dan has for the 1" bulkheads and it was a lot harder to use than the cheapo bits. I almost broke the stupid tank when it went through. It chunked out a bit of glass but was still ok with the Bulkheads gasket covering it.

My bit for the 1" BH might be OK for one more hole but it has almost completely worn out after about 15 holes through verious glass up to 3/4" thick.

Hello,
This is a good topic to bring up, you can actually run into some real big issues when drilling tanks even half full. The stress factors involved in drilling a tank when it has water in it is huge. You may get luck like the some hobbyist who drill tanks and have had no issues. However you may end up with a 29 gallon tank on the floor. You must fully understand the concept of drilling glass, and how sensitive and how quick one "spider" can cause the whole tank, or pane you are drilling to break. More or less why risk it, just drain it, drill it and fill it. Laziness will only bring you problems, maybe not now, but down the road another time. Don’t cut corners when it comes to the liability of the livestock in your tank and this hobby. At any rate good luck to you and drilling your tank, what ever path you choose. See it work out both ways personally!

Ben, let me know if you want to go for it. It's not as big a deal as some people make it out to be. I can help out and I think we can get another hole out of my old holesaw if you don't mind taking our time :)

I only have the size for a 1" bh. Shoot me a PM if you want to plan something.
