Glass question

Does anyone know how to tell if glass is tempered? I'm throwing around ideas in my head and thinking if i can drill 1 of my tanks but im unsure if its tempered.

if in doubt.............dont try.

I have had one explode on me, its un-nerving as well as a waste of money.

There is no real easy way to tell.

Supposedly, you can take UV Polarized Sunglasses or the like and look at a tank. Untempered glass will be clear and tempered glass will have a wierd effect to it. I haven't tried this though.

Some Tempered Glass has a "sheen" to it. i.e. It has a slightly different color when looked at from the side. Most of the tempered glass sheens I have seen has a greenish cast to it.

Also, does your tank have a tag on the bottom stating whether any panels are tempered?

How big is the tank that you are thinking about drilling?

A single pane of tempered glass is also heavier than a non-tempered glass pane of the same size.

I know this won't help you in this exact case, but just what I have observed.

EDIT: Oh, I totally agree with Paul. Once you have shattered your first piece of tempered glass, you will never do it again.

One pane of 36x36 tempered glass later..... :mad2: I learned my lesson. I now mark my clear glass, when I first get it as to whether it is tempered or not.

huh, I will have to try that Travis tonight. Out to the shop I go! :D

Well, I'm still not sure about this, though. Isn't the glass that makes up the windshield of a car tempered? If so, then polarized stuff won't work. Or is a windshield laminated glass?

I really enjoy the shattering of a pane of tempered glass. I find it to be a really cool experience.

I might wet my pants. But still neat.

Then I cry and buy a new piece of glass so I can add a new wall to my aquarium. :)
