GlennF's 1500 liter mixed reef tank

1) Do you run carbon or a phosphate remover? How may grams or cups do you put in & how often do you change it out? Are they in a reactor?

- i use carbon dosing to keep my nitrate at 1-2,5 ppm and nurish my bacteria culture.
- i don't use GFO, but iron dosing to keep my phosphate in line at 0,04-0,08ppm.
- no reactors in use. all dosings are being done straight into the sump.

2) How much water do you change out & how often and do you stir the sand or clean the sand at the same time or turky baste the rocks?

- i don't apply stuctural or periodic waterchanges.
- i use alternating flow to keep dirt suspended and a powerfilter to remove detritus.
- i don't stir up my sand manually anymore, but let the animals do that for me. i.e. starfish, snails and goby's.
- surgeonfish from the ctenocheatus species keep the rocks neat and tidy.

Hey Glenn, what a stunning tank and I have only just found it. You have a lovely selection of corals and love the aquascape. I've not read the entire post yet so going to work my way through it before I ask you 300 questions you have probably already answerd. Again great tank

3) Do you supplement trace minerals?

4) How many hours do you keep your T5's on?

5) Do you spot feed your corals or your entire tank for the corals?

i supply a few macro/trace element i find essential my reef. i do this by measuring and calculated dosings.

12 hours full lighting (14x T5)
14 hours only blue (2x54w)

i do not feeds the sps coral directly.
the get whatever the can grab when i feed the fish.

Thank you for your responses!!!

On my last tank I only had about 50 species of corals & I was stressed that something would happen to them or that the electricity would go out.

I hope you have a power generator?

your welcome.

i am very relaxed about my tank.
in holland the electicity supply is very reliable.
in the past 10 years it only happened twice that electricity was interrupted by the power company and that was only for about 2-3 hours.
once or twice it happened due to a defective heater.
when i woke up i saw everything was dark and quite.
no harm was done to the life stock.
when you don't overstock your tank with fish, I thinks energy interruption for a few hours won't harm the livestock.
at least that's my experience.

when electricity supply may be interrupted for a longer period i have a car battery and 12v>220v converter ready to power a group called "emergency power"
it's a group in which i will only connect the essential streamers for water movement.

Glenn,

Amazing collection in a beautiful tank, something I'd like to achieve one day too.

Kan je me een mailtje sturen naar bart.cleemput@gmmail.com, ik zit tegen Antwerpen.
thanks!
i see you are from belgium
There is a aquarium club in there called AZAC. i have done a reading there a few months ago (27march2015).

Hey Glenn,...been following your threads on various forums. Your mixed reef tank speaks for itself. All your corals look so very healthy. Have you ever thought about publishing a book regarding your methods?---Rick

thanks.

i am a early retired succesfull businessman and a free spirit, with no attachments and obligations to anyone but myself.

Reefkeeping is a hobby which got out of hand, just like many of my other hobby's.
when you love doing something, you do research and get better at it.

i do this for pleasure/leisure.
it's being done at my own pace and time.
writing a book would mean, i have to turn it into work sitting in a dull and dusty office all by myself with losts of paperwork and would depend on others to produce/distribute it.

to much obligations......i rather have fun and interacting with people is far more rewarding.

thats why i choose to do what i do now..
The internet is a powerfull and free media for everyone to use and share... Why not use it freely without being bound to time place and companies.
