Ya....silicone really isnt the stuff you should be using. Go to your local hardware store and buy some PVC cement. It comes in a small metal container and has a special sponge applicator that you use to smear it around.
I wanna add that this is exactely why LFS get such a bad rap. New guys like you and me go in there with NO experience and expect to get honest answers. Instead we get advice that sets us back....its really frusterating.

I'd stop going to that LFS if that's what he told you; it takes a special brand of retardedness to make a recommendation like that. If someone doesn't know something I'd rather they just be honest and tell me they don't know, rather than spew out some BS that's going to waste my time and money.
For PVC just go to plumbing department of your local hardware store and ask for PVC glue. Get the purple jar and the red jar. Follow the directions on the label and you're good to go. If you have threaded PVC use teflon tape or teflon paste to keep it from leaking.
