I have black bulkheads and 90 degree elbows. They are also the slip elbows. Can I use pvc glue or do I need the glue for the black pipe? My elbows are black also.

I try to be over cautious and drop glued fittings into a bucket of water and vinegar for a day to leech any possible toxins out. Likely overkill. Also you may find threaded bulkheads easier in the future. Makes any replumbing a quicker cleaner job.

There really isn't anything toxic in PVC to aquarium life. Some plastics, like BPA can leach elements that can cause problems but I would not consider them to be toxic. Some injected plastic parts on equipment can be covered in mold release with is use in pumps, heaters, and any HOB or canister filters. Rinse those with warm water and you should be fine.

If you are gluing parts, PVC cleaner and primer will remove anything that might make a bad bond.

Oh cool! Thank you for the new info. I am working on a new 40 breeder. I am building the stand and canopy myself. It kinda has a pirate theme to it,but I am not going overboard with it. My canopy will look like a pirate chest. Lol Arrrr

I use transition cement when going from the bulkheads to pvc since the bulkheads are ABS. They sell it at HD in a bluish can.
