Gluing Spa flex

I know nothing about gluing plumbing, but how long does it take the cement to dry? Did you have it clamped together with anything?

yes, PVC cement is right, but did you...

1. use primer?
2. use primer and cement on both male and female parts?
3. hold it in place a little longer than normal pvc?

I rocked spa flex for about a year w/o problems, however I like rigid better (I know Im *** backwards), but with the flex it just takes a little more time and you relaly have to hold it in place while it "dries"

maybe prime and glue the ends and tape it together for a few mins...I dontk now, hopefully someone with current spa flex experience will chime in

Im assuming you mean spa flex, as in this pic

what grade cement did you get?

I use Oatey - medium : clear PVC cement and can tell you from experience that chit ain't ever coming apart after about 5 minutes.

there is Heavy Duty and I have found when using this you break the fitting before you can pull it apart. really whats the point then :D

Well I glued it again last night and this morning i went and tested the bond.

The pipe popped out of the fitting. The other flex fitting is holding strong. Its only a couple of inches. The part that keeps poping out is a 5' section of flex that when I bend the flex to go the right way it just pops out. I am stopping at the depot tonight and buyinga couple of things. Heavy Duty PVC Cement, New primer, and some parts to make thins thing happen with just regular PVC pipe.

I am not sold on this flex pipe as yet but we shall see. Its ****ing me off and the G/F who is tired of this tank already is giving me the old random remarks including "see you have no idea what your doing" "you cant use that for what your using it for" "is this even possible" "you should just buy me a puppy because it will spend time with me while your with your fish tanks"

The flex is on the verge of needing to be conqured not because its "easier to work with" or anything of the sort, its almost a mission to prove someone wrong here that is watching from a the gallery.

I think you guys will get what I am saying and ladies take notes.

Wrap the spaflex around the g-f's throat, then try and re-glue, you will notice it works much better and the added motivation of her labored breathing will make you feel better as well. :D

PVC works much better when the parts are clean, the slightest bit of dirt or corrosion makes a good bond difficult.

I wouldn't do that.

She has gottent his way everytime i set up a tank. I am setting up one and getting rid of another so its not a true expansion just an upgrade. Shes great and after the tank is up she will love it. She's just a little impatient about some things.....which is a fair tradeoff because she wanted me to watch baseball with her last night Mets not the Cards and come sundays pretty soon she will want my *** on the couch next to her.

not much to complain about there.

you could try putting your flex in the oven at the lowest setting for a few minutes to make it more flexible, straighten it out, then use so youre not constantly fighting with its tendency to return to the shape it was on the roll

Make sure you primer the fitting and the hose both. Slap a good amount of glue on then as you insert it turn it like you are tightening. It should only turn about a quarter of a turn at most and stop due to it already sticking. That also spreads the glue. I glue and will run water within a few minutes even though you are "supposed to wait for cure".

Yeah i think my glue or something is going bad......I could twist the connection for about 30 seconds last night.

Sounds like you are doing it right. so I would get new glue. The only time I have ever had a problem is when I tried using PVC, CPVC, all purpose glue.. That didn't work, but reg. PVC glue as always worked great. Like everyone else as said make sure to prime and Glue both the fitting and the Pipe.

and now that you've tried a few times, I think it might be in your best interest to get a new fitting and snip off the end of your pipe with all the gunk on it and start with two new surfaces

Sweet lord Heavy Duty is now my glue of choice.

I got the pipes connected and yes latazyo I cut the old crappy sections off. I think I will be water testing this weekend. A connection I made on flex with the regular glue seemed weak so I covered the connection with heavy duty glue, let it run down into the connection. It formed a nice clear almost fiberglass resin type of seal. I feel safe now.

I will have to say I am not impressed with the flex PVC. It does not allow for much movement, sweeping curves seem all it is good for. I could have done the whole project in one night with regular pipe. I will use flex again in the future simpley because there are less fitting which do slow water flow. Pictures will be coming this weekend for all to see and comment on.

I will buy a return pump on Friday with my shaving money, (there is a shaving study in my building where I sahve take a survey for two weeks and make $200) what type of return would be good for a 70 gallon stock tank. I will be adding multiple powerheads in the tank. And the fuge will be coming off of the sump.

I am thinking maybe a mag 7 or 9 ??? ANy one have one for sale? My mag 5 is loud and would like to stay away form that this time so if you know anything quiet let me know.

get cheap ace brand glue from hardware store with primer that stuff will lock up in 15 seconds and run water through almost minutes later, i know just put in new plumbing in house and new sewer lines, all plastice tubing was cheap anyway i didn't use any of that flex tubing.
