Goby Love at last!!!!

Hi all,

I just noticed today (03-20) that one of my new pairs of Green Band Bobies (Gobiosoma multifasciatum) had laid a patch of eggs in their goby PVC condo. They are bright orange and looking good. Problem is that I dont know when they were laid and I am finding a ton of different hatching dates from different people. What are your experiences with this species??

My parameters are:
NH3 0
NO2 0
NO3 trace
SG 1.023
Temp 80F

I am getting a 5 ready for the fry, I just really want to narrow the hatching date!!!

Thanks

Goby condo! LOL

As soon as they become grayish, move them to a larval tank. Just insert an airline thru the pipe and hook an airstone to it, the air should flow through the eggs. Be careful, too much movement can make them hatch and if you are not ready...

Ed,

Thanks for your input! I was going to try and let the male assist in the hatching so I could harvest the fry that night.

Would you suggest a co-cultured larva tank (phyto and rotifers)?

thanks

That is the only way to go, the only thing different from raising clownfish is that the algae density will have to be higher/darker.

It would be hard to remove such small larvae from a tank.

Tip: when you see a couple hatched the next morning, you can make the rest hatch, gently squirting water with a pipete over the eggs.

Collection of the larvae in our 24 Cube is easy as the larvae are positively phototrophic...they hatch out in our 24 and simply go straight to the surface of the tank. I just sit there with a cup and scoop them out as the show up...usually takes about an hour.

FWIW,

BTW, sorry, but I wish I could help you on hatching times...unfortunatley I never get to see the spawns, only the resulting larvae. At their peak (prior to the move) I had a hatch every 6-9 days...so the incubation period can't be "that" long.

Good luck...I haven't gotten 'em past 5 days yet.

I'll try to get some pics of the male guarding the eggs. It will be pretty hard to get a shot of the eggs because they were laid at the end of a 2 inch section of 1/2 PVC with caps at both ends. Just like the PVC "condo" that Martin Moe described in his Orchid Dotty Journal.

When I feed is the only time that he pops out for a second and if I get close to the tank he just darts back into the condo. But overall he is fanning all the time or at the entrance and very dark coloration.

This is all pretty exciting for me as this is the first of the Gobiosomas for me to breed!

Thanks
