Going asexual doesn't mean anything. Going sexual means that an algae is releasing its gametes (sperm and eggs) into the water. It depletes oxygen levels and releases all of the nutrients the algae absorbed back into the water at once. It can be a big problem and can even cause an entire tank to crash. Caulerpa is notorious for going sexual. Chaetomorpha doesn't.
