Going Bare Bottom, WTD with Wrasses

Hi all,

Getting rid of my 4" sandbed. I have a Six line and a Melanurus.

Will they wedge themselves in rock top sleep or should I just trade em in when I remove the sand?

The 6-line sleeps in the rocks and will be fine without sand. The Melanurus needs sand to sleep in.

a lot of people that go bb and have a wrasse that sleeps in the sand just put a tupperware dish of sand somewhere in their tank for it to sleep in. one of my friends actually just had to QT all of his fish due to ich, and it is working great for his wrasse in the hospital setup.

I put a piece of tupperware with about 3" of sand in it, just a small like 6" x 6" square tupperware container, for my checkerboard wrasse, and the rest of the tank was bare bottom. He went into there to sleep every night. I put it behind some of the bigger rocks so it wasnt even visible unless you really looked for it.

It's easy to do and then you can keep your fish

I'll see about Melanurus and tupperware. If I can hide it maybe.

Like having the Melanurus for pest control.

There are a few people that keep sand dwelling wrasses w/out sand. While I don't necessarily advocate it, you could try it. If the wrasse looks stressed out after a while then you could try to add a Tupperware of sand. If it's not to bad, then don't worry about it.

Did the bb thing. Went back to sand. BB usually means dead snails. Plus sand looks way better.

If you don't have sps, forget it, sand is more natural.

We had a bottom seal rupture on our tank last September and were lucky to be home. We managed to save most of our fish and coral. They have been housed in a temporary tank in our garage for 7 months while we waited for the replacement. Our male African Leopard Wrasse has been sleeping in a tupperware container during this time. While not ideal, it does work.
