Going, Going, Gone!

Well the rock slide not only broke several of my corals. Even worse was the slide landed on my torch coral. I guess it must have damaged the coral, which caused an infection. Well as you can probably guess this turned to brown jelly disease and you guessed it, the disease has consumed one of my favorite pieces. Man that sucks

It kinda reminds me of that old saying $h!+ H@ppen$. I am just hoping it doesn't move over to my 8+ head hammer.

My understanding is there is not. You can cut off the infected head sometimes and stop it. In my case I had two heads but they were still joined in the center with tissue and it was a hopeless case. I have dipped the coral and treated it with antibiotic but I expect it to be devoured by sunset. Just one of those things I guess. By the way that Birdnest is going to be green I think.

Green is fine, I was just letting you know its coloring up. It may actually go pink later when its color returns.

oh. ok. glad it is doing good. my tank is scaring me right now. every time i put my hand in it the dang thing wants to cloud up. i do a water change and it is fine in a little bit. but the minute i put my hands back in it then it does it again. nothing seems to be bothered by it but my clavularia. Even then xenia is opened up. All of te fish seem fine as well. I know the abvious answer is keep my hands out ofthe tank, but i dont even need to explain how hard that is. lol. i make sure my hands are cleaned but something is going on. Any ideas?

Is there nothing that you can do about it? Coral disinfectant dip?

Yup....you can dip it in Lygol's Iodine.

Micheal,
As for the clouding thing I am not sure what it happening there. You say it happens when you put your hand in? How about your wifes hand? What chemicals or powders have you worked with recently. You washing your hands with dish soap and rinsing well in hot water then allowing it to completely dry before putting them in the tank? What is the PH of the tank right now? How about Calcium and Alk? If your able to check those do so. When you put your hand in are you moving sand or rock? Just stumped I guess.
Allen

Twkenny,
I dipped lugols but its still not stopping it unfortunately.

Hey Allen, I hope my Lugols story worked out for you as well. Tell me how it goes. Did you ever get a chance to look at your RPE's for me?

ph is 8.2, calcium is 460, oxygen lvls are high, and i could not test alk cause i cannot find my test kit. still looking for it. All precautions taken as far as washing hands. lol. turned skimmer off and running carbon now. did water change also. maybe it is something simple i am overlooking. All three types of clavularia are retracted. Everything else is opened up fine. must be something they are snesitive to. how long can i run carbon in my tank without causing problems?

We have not changed soaps or anything like that and it has only happened the passt two times i have messed with it. And i do not let my wife put her hands in my tank. ARE YOU CRAZY?

Kiran,
I looked and I just don't see where I can take a frag from yet. I have you first in line still.

Micheal,
LOL, maybe just let her dip in there to see what happens. Maybe your tank is allergic to you, get a picture the next time it clouds up.

Have you guys considered wearing gloves? I know it sounds cumbersome, but it can save your tank from disasters and some people from having an allergic reaction. I saw some scary pictures of guys and ladies' arms after they put their arms in their tanks - red bumps and welts - not pretty. I recall EvilMel got her arm feeling numb for a few hours after messing with zoanthids. The shoulder length OB gloves are easy to put on and a lot more flexible than the blue and orange aquarium gloves. It really saves you in a pinch like when you have to take something out of your tank in a hurry.

I had an incident a few years ago, sticking my arm into my tank. I killed all my fish, acros and mushrooms (I read that they have some sort of common genetic traits.) Amazingly enough, LPS's, softies and my maxima clam were not affected at all.

This is what happened. After coming back in from throwing some Miracle Grow Germination Preventer outside on my pansies, I found my cute little zoa eating dwarf angel in a fish trap bottle I set a few hours earlier. I took off my gardening gloves, long sleeve hoodies and shirt, washed my hands and arms carefully and then stuck my arm in the tank to retrieve the bottle. A few hours later, my fish is practically dead, my acros and mushrooms were dying all over the place. I did 70% water change immediately (that's all the water I had on hand at the time.) The next day I did a 100% water change. All through this ordeal, my clam, LPS's and softies looked like nothing ever happened.

I now try not to do gardening and reef maintenance work on the same day. If I have to, I make sure I take a shower after gardening and I won't touch my tank until then. I wear an OB glove for sure. A lot of gardening products and common house hold cleaners are very harmful to fish and aquatic lives - including some "organic" stuff and the residue stay on you for awhile.

Seems cumbersome, but nowhere near as cumbersome as starting over. lol. it is clearing up now but one of my frags fell and i got to get my hands in there to get it back up. lol. a little nervous about it. it has cleared up now. Where do i get some shoulder length gloves? A medical supply place i am assuming. Is there any chance that any sanitizing stuff they put on those is harmful to your tank?

Tongs and tweezers do not allow much maneuvability, though. There is no chemical put on OB gloves as far as I know. I got a pack of them from a local Tractor Supply store, but I like the kind that a large animal vet gave me better - a much better quality.

I saw these online.

"Designed for OB and A.I. use, the AG-TEK MAXI-SLEEVE is a premium glove measuring 39" from fingertip to shoulder. It is made from a blended polymer film for an optimum strength/sensitivity ratio. The brown 1.25 ml extra-strength sleeve comes in a resealable bag containing 100 gloves."

It's $24 shipped. I want to order some but I don't need 100 gloves.
