Going T5 on my 180 gallon...

I am going to buy the icecap 60" 6 bulb with slr reflectors from reefgeek and I was wondering what bulbs to get with that setup.

I keep a mixed reef tank of sps, lps and softys.


Tank is a standard 180.

Grim where are you need your input LOL

I would go: (suggest UVL, but I don't think they come in 80w).

With the reef geek reflectors they are 3" and the tank is 24" from front to back if I am correct?
The back T5 and most fwd T5 would fit and you could rotate the reflector so it really wouldn’t take up the hole 3" of room for each reflector.
So why not go with 8 T5s?
Right now I have on one of my 125g tanks is two 20k 400w MH and two VHO. But I am also moving over to the T5 and just VHO no more MH I get too much heat from them + I do not do any sps.

Not saying it is the ultimate combo or anything. Everyone likes different looks. Get some extra bulbs inc a 6500K and see what looks good to you.

I want the 8 bulb combo but all i can afford right now are 6. I figured in the near future i would save up and buy another ballast and 2 more bulbs.

when you order, you might want to ask about the reefgeek reflectors. From what I've read, they're just as good if not better than the SLRs and the come in 60" length. The SLR's don't come in 60", you have to put 2 three footers together. I'd give Greg a call and he'll take good care of you.

I like this combo, but I may try moving bulbs around to see what that does...I also have an Ati Pro Color bulb that I had in for awhile... I may add that back in in a different spot than before...I personally DO NOT like any bulb with a K of 6500, 6700... to me they are very ugly and it is hard to compensate for their ugly yellow color...

But don't you need those 6500K bulbs for coral growth? I kinda confused about all the blue+ and aquablue bulbs. Wouldn't it be like running all actinics?

blue + and actinic + bulbs ( ATI/ G-man) have high par just like the whiter bulbs. The aquablue bulbs are white bulbs not actinic

Yes. Despite the name, it is a crisp white bulb.

ReefGeek reflectors are more like 2.5". They are not 3" May make a difference.
