I would love to have a go at breeding Tangs! It will be very hard i know but think of the progress that we could make if we could breed them, I have a 75gal tank that is going to be lovely reef tank, only containing fish/corals/inverts that would naturally meet in the wild.

Yellow Tang is the chosen fish, for I have always loved them, I want them from the Australian reef so I can keep a few other species (mainly a clown) They will be added at 1-3cm of size and will add 4 so I can hopefully get a male and female.

A pair of each, I plan to separate them best as possible with the way ill place the anemone and LR for clowns hardly venture far from the anemone. This way the clown hopefully will not see each other.

But do you think my plan is possible.

Im pretty sure they are broadcast spawners so you would probably need a bit more then a 75g, and a few more than 4.

I know that Yellow Tangs have been raised out to something like 75 days??? I believe done in Hawaii, the info is probably on Frank B's website. I'd say at least 6 fish, 7 or 9 preferably, and a very large (500 gallon plus) tank, cylindrical perhaps, as a starting point.

Yea from the little info I have seen a 75 is NOT going to do it. In fact a "tank" will probably not do it, you are looking at a pool to make this happen. While AES is generally about the most expensive source for just about anything I AM amazed that they have those above ground pools so cheap, a 12' dia 4' deep pool ( 3375 gallons) is only $756. Of course you wouldn't want to pay the shipping to NZ but there has to smething similar available to you. Or they offer those portable show tanks like 8' dia X 30" deep ( 750 gallons) for $616 but I doubt that is gonna be deep enough. The advantage is it's light (for shipping) and no metal parts. I have always thought one of those "dunk tanks" they use at carnivals might be perfect, even has a viewing window

In any event this is only going to be practicle if your climate is such that you can keep it outdoors without added heat or light and if you have access to free NSW. Otherwise I think the project would be sooo expensive you really couldn't justify it considering the odds of success.

Finally, there is another thread (recent) that discusses tangs, the point being you'd want a species that commands a higher price than the unbearably common and "cheap" yellow tang that gets imported by the thousands every month.

Yeah, it's really Z. gemmatum that you'd want to succeed with, although the realities of a project like this, you'd probably start with something like Z. flavescens to prove the concept and get first success (so you have cheap and abundant broodstock to play with) and the moment you've totally nailed it down, switch over to broodstock that may run you $20-30k US and there's the profit potential...afterall didn't Frank Baench first do Flame Angels, but now he's only doing fish that retail at the $700 mark?
