I've been eyeballing all three assessors on LA. My lfs still wants over $110 for the ora yellow though.... Smh

They have been hitting live aquaria for 50$. I would not pay 100$ for the Ora ones. We are up to 9, our lfs gave us one because it had a "bent" spine and they did not want to sell it. Peaceful reef safe fish that are fun to watch. Avoid the wild caught is my best advice.

I have 4 of them at the moment. I have been keeping Assesors for a long time. In the past 3-4 years the assesors have gotten very pricey. They used to be a $30 fish and getting a group of 6-10 was not such a big deal.
But the prices have gone way up.
They are a great little fish. They are fairly hardy. They are totally peaceful. They don't bother anybody. They can be shy. Mine were in hiding for months before they started coming out and hanging as a group.
The Macneils assesors are also great fish. Not great coloration (dull black) but they are nice looking fish - big fins and nice shape. And they seem a little more interested in swimming out in open water.
The only issue I ever had with my assesors was when Scott Fellman, gave me his Peppermint Hog fish. We added it to my tank and in less than 3 seconds it swam over to a yellow assesor and bit the head off. And then 10 seconds after that it swam over to another assesor bit it in the middle, slammed it into a rock and tore the fish in 1/2.
These are great community tank fish, and if you can afford getting multiples you will definitely enjoy them.

I got one on a 50% off sale, paid $25.
Picture of him in the observation tank.
Moved him to the the display tank after 6 weeks.
After almost 2 weeks of hiding, he is now out all the time, usually swimming sideways.
Shy at first, but once used to the tank, very good fish. Bothers no-one.

How we got our group of 6 at one shot: Spoke to Ora at Macna, they recommended asking our lfs with an Ora account to ask for them even if they were not on the list. We did exactly that when we got home, asked for 6 they got 6. Our lfs also runs a buy one get one half off sale pretty much year round. So I think the price averaged out to 45 a fish for the group of 6. The others we have picked up all around. The macnelli is dull at first but our three are growing up and getting some cool colors in. Those you really can't find cheap though.

Do you still have the hogfish?
I had an Ora yellow assessor a few years ago. Very docile I would recommend them to be a centerpiece fish but they are good reef habitants.

To augment what mike said before, we got a gold assessor at MACNA 2009 that was captive raised, then got a second one about a year ago, then added a group of six this year, and then had a LFS give us one they could not sell. We have lost one, and currently have eight gold assessors (we lost one this winter).
The three macnelli's we have only had for a few months, but they have grown significantly and are coloring up nicely.
They coexist in our 210.
They are great little fish, I love the colors and they do get a LOT less shy over time.

Yes they do, and upside down. We were away for the weekend and when we came back we saw one of ours guarding a nest of eggs. Pretty exciting for us. And we miscounted, we both confirmed that we still have all 9 of them.

Are multiples ok in smaller tanks, or do they need more space? I'd like 2-3 in my biocube 29 if they would get along peacefully. Will the Gold and Blue get along as well in the same size tank?
I'd like a pair of golds and a blue if I can find them. If that's not advisable I'll just stick to one of them.
